Google Mini can't connect to WiFi

LeicesterChris

I recently had a router upgrade, and my Google Home Mini couldn't connect to it. I went into the Google Home app as suggested, and reconnected - it seemed to find the Mini just fine, and the Mini bleeped as expected. The app asked whether I heard the bleep, I clicked "Yes", and it then said it was connecting - and then gave a message saying it couldn't connect to WiFi. The Mini itself also told me it couldn't connect, and I should check my settings in the Home app.

Google responded to my review on the Play Store saying that devices need to be within about 5 metres of the router. My router is upstairs in my office, my speaker downstairs - more than 5m away. However, this doesn't seem a very satisfactory answer - the Mini has always worked (and the WiFi is fine downstairs), and I had been considering upgrading and getting Google Nest with devices like the doorbell and lights - but if the advice now is that devices need to be near the router, then the app is more a case of "Google Room" than "Google Home" - my doorbell and lights won't all be near the router, for example, so doesn't this advice render Google Nest pretty much unusable? Seems like a major downgrade to me!

Hi LeicesterChris,

Thanks for posting.

Since you've mentioned that you have a new router to connect with, you can follow these easy steps to connect your Google Home/Nest speakers to your new network:

  1.  Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap your device.
  3. At the top right corner, tap Settings  and then Device information.
  4. Next to "Wi-Fi," tap Forget. You’ll be taken back to the Home app home screen.
  5. Follow the setup steps to set up your device on the new Wi-Fi network.

If you get an error message that says "could not communicate with your [device]" when you try to forget your network, or the steps above don't work, you'll need to factory reset your device and set it up again.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Princess

Hey LeicesterChris,

I want to ensure you are good to go, and everything is working properly. Please let me know if you are still having trouble, as I will be locking the thread in 24 hours due to inactivity.

Hi Jake - no, it still doesn't work, but to be honest the requirement that devices have to be physically close to the router is a showstopper anyway - for instance, I can't ensure a doorbell will be in the same room as the router! I'm going to look at other suppliers' alternatives.

I have tried these same steps 30 times and I still get the same message that that my mini cannot connect to the wifi.

Still it can’t connect I did everything

So, I finally got to a live person (in the Phillilpines) and he walked me through the solution.  There is a factory reset button on the bottom of my Google Home Mini, I had to hold it down to reset. Also!  My phone (Samsung) settings was set under: Mobile Data : "access the internet through my mobile network"  This needs to be UNCHECKED for the mini to talk to the phone!  Now, I have my google-girl back.  Good luck to you!

Hi everyone,

@Mizehumphrey - Thanks for sharing the steps you tried. I'm glad that it's already working on your end.

Has anyone still experiencing the same thing? Let me know by responding to this thread.

Best,

Princess

Same here, exactly the same issue. Google won't help.

It is odd that Google aren't interested in addressing this, as it does make considering Nest and other Google Home products a bit pointless. I'm interested in getting a doorbell, for instance, but Google telling me it has to be in the same room as the router is just crazy; I wonder if Nest is another product that Google are thinking of abandoning?

Deleted Google Home app & reinstalled.  Worked, while none of the Google online suggestions did.

Thanks 53DS - good suggestion, and I did try that initially, but no luck.
