Having to ask twice?

Gasman
Bronze

Ask my bedroom mini 'OK Google, play some REM for 30 minutes'

Response is 'Here is a Spotify station featuring REM, master bedroom speaker will stop playing in 30 minutes' This is what I would expect. However nothing happens.

So I ask 'OK Google, what is playing now?', response is 'There is nothing playng right now'

I repeat the request again, this time it plays it as it should have the first time?

Hi Gasman,

This is not the experience we want you to have, let me help you. A few questions: which Nest speakers are we working with? When did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made? Have you tried other commands? How about asking your Nest device to play a song?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Dan

Hi Dan,

I will give that a go. Meanwhile .....

To my living room mini. FW324896, Cast: 1.56.324896 This appears to be 1st Gen from your link?

Me: OK Google switch the uplighter ON.

Mini: Got it, turning off 4 outlets.

Ask again as normal and it switches the light on.
Fortunately it did not turn off 4 outlets, though I had to check on the phone.

Good day Dan,

I have 4 minis, 3 are Gen1 and other is Gen2.
I have now rebooted my router and powered off and on all 4 minis.

I also rebooted my phone? Not sure why that is needed? Are you assuming that the Google assistant runs solely from that device, as that would not be the case, as I have a tablet as well, though that is powered off nightly.

Will just have to wait and see now? 🙄

Re questions

When did your issue begin? Too long to recall now.

Were there any recent changes made? No.

Have you tried other commands? Yes, as mentioned either here or in other threads, ask to turn something on and they say 'turning xx off' Now they will switch something off and say absolutely nothing some times.

How about asking your Nest device to play a song? Again already mentioned either here or in other threads, sometimes it works some times it does not.

One thing they can generally do is give me the time when asked, but this morning while in bed, I asked the bedroom mini what the time was and the landing mini replied, then the bedroom mini said 'Hmm, something went wrong, please try later' I did so in about 30 minutes or so and it was able to give me the time then.

Ok, all of the above has not made any difference whatsoever.

Bedroom mini.

Me: OK Google set an alarm

Mini: OK set it for when.

Me: 9am

Mini: OK set it for when.

Me: 9am

Mini: OK set it for when.

Me: 9am and finally the alarm is set. 😡

Living room mini.
Me: OK Google, clear shopping list

Mini: Are you sure you want to clear the shopping list

Me: Yes

Mini: Are you sure you want to clear the shopping list

Me: Yes, and finally shopping list is cleared.😡

Living Room and Landing minis
Ask them to switch something off or on.

Now I get no confirmation, just a stupid sound from the mini???

OK, I do not know what you guys are doing at your end, but this is the latest saga for me.
This is on 3 of my 4 minis.

Ask them to set an alarm.
The lights on each go through their sequence, and that is it, nada, nothing. 😞
So I ask them 'Hey Google, are you awake' to which they respond 'Always'???

My bedroom mini decides to drop the wifi every now and again, despite the router being in the next room with only a plaster board wall between them.
I asked my bedroom mini to play some REM for 30 minutes.
The landing mini started playing the music??? The bedroom mini just flashed it's lights and might have made a beep.

I told it to stop which it just ignore, so I had to unplug it to get it to stop.
I asked the bedroom mini the same, only then did it play the music.

All this is feedback as well as sending via the minis.

Living Room Mini:

Me: OK Google, set an alarm.
Mini: OK for when
Me: Two Twenty PM
Mini: OK, alarm set for 8pm ??????????

Me:OK Google Cancel alarm
Mini: OK, alarm cancelled

I asked the above again and got the same stupid response???? 😞

I have sent feedback about this, though that seems to have no effect?, how are we supposed to know? 😞

Again it is selective on what it wants to hear? Who on earth asks for a time as 20pm????

Hi Gasman,

Apologies for the delayed response. We might need to revert one of your Nest speaker to its default and original settings by doing a factory reset and setting it up again. Let’s try one of your Nest Mini and one of your Google Home Mini. Here’s how:

Nest Mini — on the side of your device, switch the mic off. The lights will turn orange. Press and hold the center of the Nest Mini, where the lights are on top. After 5 seconds, your device will begin the factory reset process. Keep holding for about 10 seconds more, until a sound confirms that the device is resetting.

Google Home Mini — on the bottom of Home Mini, press and hold the factory reset button located below the power cord. Look for a circle etched into the base. After 5 seconds, your device will begin the factory reset process. Keep holding for about 10 seconds more, until a sound confirms that the device is resetting.

Once done, replicate the issue if it persists and tell me how it goes.

Regards,

Dan

Good day Dan,

Already done that?
This was the mini I factory reset a while back on Google's request.

If not mentioned in this thread, then in some other.

Found it. https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Ask-for-an-alarm/m-p/387382/emcs_t/S2h8...

Hello there,

Apologies for the delayed response. Let’s try this: unplug all other Nest devices while leaving only one near your router. Give it a go and tell me on the results.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan,

There is no point having one near the router. 😞

The bedroom one which is nearest the router does not answer sometimes, whilst the one on the landing further away from me and the router replies.

Besides they need to be where they need to be.

I can go out into the back garden and surf the net, listen to internet radio stations without any issues, so I do not think my wifi is the issue.

The mini I factory reset was the living room one, which is downstairs, as is the kitchen mini.
My router is upstairs in the small bedroom at the front of the house. TV works fine, media streamers work fine, phone & tablet work fine.

How long am I meant to leave the other devices unplugged?, as I do not have to ask twice all the time, just when the device chooses not to understand. That might well be  afew days before any of them decide to do it again, and as even with 3 unplugged the same could be said for the living room mini?

I appreciate you trying to assist, but as I  have mentioned before, this is mainly feedback, as something changes at your end and buggers up the devices at our end.

Hey there Gasman,

Got it! We really appreciate your patience and understanding. It would help a lot if you could send us feedback about it. Record a message with the description of the issue, and include the words Incorrect answer

We always look to improve the product and your feedback is valuable, as it allows us to learn. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns as I will be locking this thread in 24 hours.

Kind regards,

Good day Dan,

Already doing that, albeit with some colouful language sometimes when I get so annoyed at them. 🙂

This morning, I woke early, so said to the bedroom mini 'Hey Google cancel alarm' as I had one set in case I slept in.
Mini responded 'There is nothing playing right now' ???

Asked again and it eventually cancelled the alarm.

This is what the mini *thought* it heard.

Hi Gasman,

Apologies for the late response. I appreciate all the effort you put into this. We encourage you to keep on sending a feedback about anything you notice unusual on its behavior.

Let me know if you have additional questions and I'd be happy to assist you further.

Best,

Princess

Hi Princess,

Please close this ticket. I bought an Echo Dot and now use that in the Living Room.
If that continues to work correctly (the minis actually did when first purchased 😥) I will get more of them.
