How do we turn off 'photo memories' on nest hub?

How do we turn off 'show my photo memories' on a nest hub please?

At present I have a photo album selected to cycle as the wallpaper on the screen, but photo memories have recently started showing up, seemigly drawn from all photos not just that selected album.

Someone asked this previously and the answer was that we can't turn it off. That's not at all satisfactory though, as our privacy is based entirely on being able to control which images or personal information appear where. To have all albums appearng as part of photo memories on a screen where only selected albums are meant to show on there is a massive gap in our ability to control what appears where. Please address this immediately.

Not ideal but found you can switch off personal results on specific devices and that seems to remove the memories but leave any curated albums on display. Means she no longer recognises me however so this might impact other uses that you use the hub for.

Assistant > personal results > select device > toggle

Hope it helps!

Hi AndyUK831,

Thanks for posting.

I’m sorry that you're having this kind of inconvenience but, just to make sure that we’re on the same page, the photo memories that’s showing up on your Nest hub are the ones from a week, a month or a year ago? Are these photos saved to Google Photos or other photo platforms?

Could you send us a picture of the Nest display that shows the photo memories? Below are the steps on how to upload a photo or video:

  1. Hit reply or Start a new post.
  2. Click Insert Image.
  3. Choose an image source location.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions
  5. Also, you can tap the "Drag and Drop" option. Maximum attachment is 5 MB.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Dan

Hello Dan.

picture below.

The photo memories seem to be drawn from all albums, and all years. There appears to be no way to stop them being visible to everyone. Which is a complete invasion of privacy, and not at all acceptable. I've set up my nest hub to only show photos from a specific album, but this new addition automatically draws photos from ALL my albums on google photos, from all years. I'm a huge fan of google normally, but this is based entirely on being able to trust that I'm still in control of how my personal information is used. Particularly things like photos.

This is directly contrary to what i want. Seriously - please address it now so we can once again control how our photos are used.

Please escalete this to whoever in the product team needs to see this. thanks

Any feedback you might be able to share around this Princess? Been a little while since the issue was raised and hopefully makes sense to the product owners and can probably be fixed quite easily with a "Display? Yes/No option" .

Have we figured out how to turn off the memories on the Google hub?

Yes. See my answer.

I'm having the same issue. Was this ever resolved?

I'm having a similar issue, take this context, Google starts showing images of top memories to my wife, but they are photos of my ex girlfriend from years back. I didn't ask for these "memories" to be shown, and I have no clue who in their right mind would think it would be a good idea to start showing any image it wants from my Google photo albums.

Having the same issue! Did you get a fix? I deleted photos of my ex but they keep on appearing

See this thread...it's not fixed. This feature is breaching people's privacy.

The fact that Google can't just tell us how to disable memories on one of their devices says a lot.

I have the same issue, my phone memories are displaying on a nest hub device and I can't get an answer anywhere except to log a ticket so they can look at the issue. It's not an issue, it's literally a feature of your devices.

It's such a software testing fail. I've had replies saying how to turn off memories within Google photos. But that's not the issue. I like it ok Google photos. I don't want them all on a screen in my house though. Other things are easily controlled within the nest hub settings. Total fail that this can't be disabled, or restricted to specific albums (as the screensaver can).

Exact same situation here. I don't want the situation where random memories/photos can be easily accessed by kids and then left on display.

Pressing and holding let's me 'dismiss' but for how long?

AndyUK831

Yea that only makes it go temporarily. I tested it and the thing came back immediately. No not dismissed at all.

Following waiting for a solution…. I agree this is ridiculous and needs to be addressed immediately! I don’t have time to go through more than 100,000 photos to make sure something doesnt pop up.

Couldn't agree more. If we could disable it, or choose particular albums only, that would be great. But this is just not at all acceptable. Genuinely can't believe nobody spotted this before rolling it out. Needs sorting immediately doesn't it.

same issue here, tried to disable, but can't. Big failure from google.

This still hasn't been fixed. I've had contact from customer service people but it's not fixed yet as you can all see on your own devices. Please fix this Google. Devices are showing pictures without us having control or providing consent. We've described the problem clearly, shown pictures too. Please just give us back control of what appears where, otherwise Google photos credibility and trusted reputation will surely be at risk at a much much larger scale than this particular problem.

I have the exact same issue. My child can see my memories from over 12 years ago! Photos that I will say are inappropriate for a child. Please 🙏 give us the option to turn it off the nests. We have a nest in every room. It is a violation of my privacy. Even if I just have guests rounds, there are certain memories I do not want to share with others!

Wild isn't it. It's a total invasion of privacy. Our trust in Google is entirely based on having control over our personal information/files/photos. I feel like we've tried to ask Google, and to highlight the problem more than clearly enough. But it persists.

It’s really sad to know there’s no way to remove this feature. I have my brother I. Law living in my house now and I don’t want him to see some private photos that may show up on the  “memories” feature 😫🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

This. This is such an obvious issue that it is extremely suspect that Google doesn't do anything about it. Either they wanted to persist, which is super nefarious, or they just don't have it together enough to identify and prioritize a fix. Either way it's bad.

The photo frame is one of the few reasons I even find the hub interesting. Frankly I don't use the screen for very much. So for Google to force me to relinquish access to my entire photo album to anyone who can talk to my device, just so that I can use my photos as a screensaver...honestly that seems incredibly negligent. I bet they change it pretty quickly if someone would adequately lay out the legal risk.

Help having the same issue! Don't want my kids or guests to access or randomly see photos. I keep this hub in our living room  .. please fix!

You can stop sharing the memories in a setting on Google Assistant. Go to the Home app, assistant settings, photos, and pick the device you would like to stop sharing to.

Ahhh thanks! I’m going to try this

This is the correct answer, thank you.

This does help as they're now hidden behind a permission request but they can still be reactivated by the on screen prompt, so any visitors could still access these easily. Unless I'm missing something else? Thanks @LD1 though this is still better.

Thanks Obicam - this is helpful. Such a shame they cant just have the switch in home settings actually turn photo memories off on the device. It's really weird to still let anybody turn it back on on the screen. Thanks for your answer though - the most helpful option we have so far.

But by removing personalisation will that all stop me from receiving information regarding my calendar etc?

What it is I have 4 nests in the household but it is only the one in the kitchen that does this, (the photo memory thing)

I'm thinking it might just be better to swap my bedroom nest over with the kitchen nest, then rename them. Even though both have the same settings so no idea why it just happens on the kitchen nest.

I also have this Problem. My kid also touched around and found all my private pictures. This is absolutely not acceptable. I do not want any of my pictures on this device as I just use it as a smart speaker.
