This is the new Mini Gen 2 I bought couple of weeks ago. It can play Youtube Music, but when I try to "Play RTHK Radio 2 (1-5) on TuneIn", nothing happens.

Is there anyone from the Nest team reading this post?  I called the Google Nest Support but I don't think the support folk even uses the Mini himself.

Hi Funperson,

I'm sorry to hear you're not able to play RTHK Radio 2 (1-5) on TuneIn ― let's check it out. A few questions: was it working before? Have you tried other radio stations other that are with or even not with Tune-in? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot on your devices by unplugging the power cord from your router followed by your Nest Mini. Restarting your phone might also help. You could also try other music platforms for us to narrow things down like YouTube or YouTube music. Please inform us of the exact command you're giving.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan

Thanks Dan_A for checking into this.

I did reboot all the devices before and one more time just now.

The RTHK Radio 1, 2 used to work couple of years ago when I used my kid's first G device, I just bought the second G and it did not work.

RTHK Radio 1-5 works if I play the them on TuneIn websites using browser.

The following commands work on my new device:

"Hey Google, play CNN radio from TuneIn"

-KNKX, KUOW, Digital Radio Hong Kong.

The exact commands I tried are:

"Hey Google, play RTHK radio 1 from TuneIn"

"Hey Google, play Hong Kong RTHK radio 2  from TuneIn"

Question: I am curious why restarting the Phone matters in this case?

Hi Funperson,

We’re glad YouTube is working that way, we can really isolate this with radio concerns. To isolate further, could you please give the command “Hey, Google! Play radio” and tell me the response. By the way, to confirm, when you mentioned RTHK radio worked a couple of years ago, does that mean you’ve been using that specific radio station until you got a new Nest Mini, where it stopped working?

If you have a radio service linked to your Home app, could you check it out: open the Google Home app Media coin>under "Manage your system", select Radio.

Check out this guide for more information.

Best,

Dan

Hi Dan,

1. When I say "Hey, Google Play Radio", it starts to pay the last radio station I was playing, that is "Digital Hong Kong Radio from TuneIn".  Note: This is not the RTHK (Hong Kong) radio stations that I want.

2. I remember I could play RTHK Radio 1 and 2 couple of years ago with the Gen 1 device which I borrowed for few months.  I did not have the Mini for over a year until I bought a new one a month ago, and unable to play again. I think there is couple of posting in this forum complaining the same problem.

3. Google Home App: it is showing SiriusXM, I am unable to delete or add a new one.  The  support told me I need to add/link the radio station here, but I told him I could not do anything on this page.

And it states, "You can also play thousands of radio station WITHOUT  linking from providers such as TuneIN..."

Thanks,

dk

Hi Funperson,

I want to chime in as I have the same problem of being unable to stream RTHK Radio 2 on all my Home (now Nest) speakers - two Minis and one Home. This radio station used to work on all of them. It just stopped working one day, and I am sure it has been at least six months now. Try this post as it seems relevant, though there may not be a solution either: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Google-nest-mini/m-p/170202

Hey folks,

To confirm, are you able to play the station from the native app? What happens when you use the Google Assistant app on your phone? Please note that TuneIn is built-in to Google Home/Nest speakers and displays, and there's no need for you to link it manually like SiriusXM.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi,

Yes, I can play the RTHK radios using browser. I don't have the Google Assistant app on my iPhone. Thanks for your expertise.

Hi Funperson,

It would help a lot if you could install the Google Assistant app on your iPhone. You can download it from the App Store. Once installed, use your Google Account to log in. Let's see the difference if you can play that specific station using the Google Assistant app.

Kind regards,

Dan

Hi Dan,

I installed the Google Assistant and "Play RTHK Radio 1 (2) from TuneIn" and it works.

Thx.

Hey there,

Awesome! As we got our resolution here, I'm going to mark this thread as resolved. I'll be locking this thread if we won't hear back from you in 24 hrs. Should that happen, feel free to create a new one if you have more questions or have other concerns in the future.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan,

I don't think there is a resolution here. The problem is  "

Mini 2nd Genration cannot play "RTHK Radio 2 on TuneIn",

which means when I speak to the Mini 2nd player, without the iPhone, I am unable to play the radio station.

Hi Funperson,

Apologies for the misunderstanding! We wanted to fully confirm if you can still play other music platforms and other radio stations? Since this is a concern with the RTHK Radio 2 on TuneIn, we highly recommend that you reach out to them to gain more info and other troubleshooting steps. Google Nest speakers rely heavily on the functions and features of 3rd party apps and services.

Tell us how it goes once you gain a hold of them.

Best,

Dan

Thanks Dan,

Is TuneIn responsible for the issue on Mini 2?  I can play the RTHK radio from TuneIn on both Chrome and Firefox browsers. How would TuneIn be able to trouble shoot Mini 2 issue?

Based on what I read in the other postings which users have issues with particular radio stations, looks like it was the TuneIn team who worked and resolved the issues.  Do you mind looking into this further?  May I assume you are the Google Mini 2 support team and have access to the developers?

Happy Holidays!

Hey there,

We're truly sorry for the inconvenience! It will help us a lot if you could also reach out to the RTHK radio support team to gain more information and other troubleshooting steps. Your Nest Mini relies heavily on the function of each radio station It can integrate with depending on the area you're in? Also, as you've mentioned, the last time RTHK worked was around 2 years ago, right? Please, contact them and tell us how it goes to further isolate this concern.

Kind regards,

Dan

Thanks Dan,

1. Are you a Google support staff?

2. Do you have access to the Mini Dev support team?

3. Do you have the ability to create a support ticket?

4. Can you/your dev team to trouble shoot by  issuing  a command " Stream RTHK Radio 2 from TuneIn" and observe the problem?  The dev team should be able to ID the possible issue by looking at the intercommunication between TuneIn and Mini.

Otherwise, this issue will be like a soccer ball, kicking around by folks in Google, TuneIn and Radio station teams.

Support team shall try to "reproduce" the issue logged by the end user and then decide what to do next.

Hi Funperson,

Apologies for the late response!

How are you with the RTHK radio 2? Is the behavior the same without any progress? How about other radio stations or music platforms, are they playing?

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the follow up! Nothing has changed, that is,  Mini still is unable to play/stream "RTHK radio 1/2 from TuneIn".  I can play other radios stations like "play KUOW", "play digital radio Hong Kong from TuneIn".

Could you please submit a ticket to Google Mini dev support?

Happy new year of 2023!

Hey there,

Happy New Year to you as well.

Since you're able to play other radio stations from a web browser and the Google Assistant app, would you mind if we do a factory reset on your Nest Mini? It will revert it back to its default and original settings, setting it up is needed. We would really appreciate it. Here's how.

Keep us posted.

Dan

Hi Dan,

1. Performed that procedure as instructed, factory reset and setup the device as new.

2. Issued " Google, play RTHK Radio 2 from TuneIn", Mini replied " Streaming RTHK Radio 2 from TuneIn", then nothing happened afterwards.

There is a "known" issue mentioned in this thread, and one user mentioned RTHK Radio station not working as well.

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Google-nest-mini/m-p/170202

Do you have a Mini and is able to reproduce the issue? This will show my "issue" is not device related, and possibly to tell where the problem resides.  I have done all the tasks this thread has asked.

Hi Funperson,

Apologies for the delayed response and thank you for doing the factory reset. For confirmation, would you mind posting here the radio stations that are working aside from the ones you mentioned above like KUOW? Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

Since the radio stations you provided worked. It would be best to reach out to RTHK for more information. Check if there are changes to their system and ask about it's compatibility with your Nest devices. I'll be waiting for your reply and will keep the thread open.

Thanks,

Dan

Hey there,

May I suggest that we shall look at  this from a different angle? We have been kicking the ball around without any real progress.

Fact:

1. Chrome browser (yes, that is Google's product) can play RTHK from TuneIn.

2. Google Assistant: "Play RTHK radio 2 from TuneIn" works.

3. App: TuneIn on iPhone can play RTHK from TuneIn.

4. Mini 2 cannot play RTHK radio 2...

With the above facts, can we logically deduce what is the likely issue?  Sorry this sounds rude, but we are back to square one.

Also, could you answer my questions that I asked for few times?

1. Is this being monitored my Google Mini device employees and  Dev/support group?

2. Can one of you reproduce and confirm the issue?  I reproduced on Gen 1 and 2 devices.

Just set up a Nest Hub 2nd gen and is unable to play "RTHK Radio 2 from Tunein". It's just keep buffering. I was able to play the station from the app on my phone but when I cast to the nest hub or say the command, nest hub can't play the station. It's super frustrating.

Elson

I have the same issue. The station plays on other platforms exactly as per Funpersom. Just not on any of my Google Home and Home Mini speakers anymore. It even plays on my Echo Dot.

Hello everyone,

Apologies for the delayed response and thanks for sharing details about this issue here. I know it must be a  frustrating experience when you're comfortable at home and RTHK radio on TuneIn doesn’t play on your Nest speakers.

It would also be helpful for the team's investigation if you could send feedback using the keywords, “RTHK radio on TuneIn not working”. For more instructions on how to send feedback via your Google Home, check out this link

Looking forward to your responses and I'll update the thread once I have additional information.

Cheers,

Dan

I have Google Home, Google Mini, Echo Display, and Echo Dot, The same command, e.g. "Play RTHK 1 from TurnIn" works on Amazon devices but not Google nowadays.  Google had worked for years but definitely NOT anymore!  Since the command is to play from TurnIn, I assume that the issue is directly connected to Google, not RTHK's support.  I think Google really need to look into this issue, instead of looking for an excuse to close the ticket.  Because of this problem, it has already held up my decision to purchase a Nest Audio.

Same. All my Amazon's devices can continue to stream RTHK radio stations from TuneIn without any issues. All my Google Home/Nest devices (Nest hub 2nd gen, Nest audio, Lenovo smart clock essential) all failed to stream RTHK stations from TuneIn (using command or selecting speakers to cast from the TuneIn app). It has been a few months already.

I can add to this. My google devices used to work with RTHK radio station for years. For the last 6 months (or more), it had not been able to play RTHK radio stations.

Hi folks,

@kennycychoi, @Ultrawind1, @fatboyw, I know how it feels if something's not working the way it should. Have you already tried doing the steps provided above? Try these steps first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Also, have you had the chance to contact RTHK to see if we can get information from them since this is isolated with RTHK alone?

Thanks,

Dan

HI Dan_A,

You told me to do the things few weeks (months) ago? With respect, I don't think we shall waste their time.  I am sure they had done that any way.

Do you mind answering my questions posted earlier?

Appreciate your follow up.

I have tried all these steps 2-3 times but nothing would help.

The frustration here is obviously that Google is not doing the troubleshooting. As an end-user, I have no idea what is wrong. Is it Google, is it Tunein, is it RTHK?

Google can do the diagnosis and determine which part is wrong - but this is not happening.

Dan, thanks for your follow-up.  I did far beyond the 3-step you posted above.  I even reset three of my devices to test if it could help.  The result was negative (still not working).  Frankly, I don't think contact RTHK is a viable solution.  Remember, our command to stream the radio from Google device is, "Hey Google, play RTHK X from TuneIn" ("from TuneIn" is optional).  It sounds like that Google will contact TuneIn server for the streaming.  It seems Google either:

1. Contacts TuneIn to obtain the RTHK streaming IP and proceeds "handshaking" on its own.

2. Establish connection with TuneIn without direct "handshaking" with RTHK's servers.

Either way, Alexa (Amazon device) does the same without any issue, which tells me that it is not a RTHK issue.  Especially (to my understanding), it is just streaming URLs connecting to RTHK's servers!  Before this issue happened, I was thinking that Google technology was surpassing Amazon and I only purchased Google devices.  However, I started switching the home assistant devices to Amazon because it frustrated me a lot.

When I see this thread, I was hoping Google's development team can truly help and free all my Google devices from bricks (I only use the devices to stream RTHK, they became bricks since then).  Since hardware reset (I have done 2x times) didn't help, I don't think plug/unplug can help.

Please forgive me if I used wrong terminology while I am not an IT professional and I only exercised my common senses to analyze the issue.  I truly believe that challenge is the foundation of advancement.  I am looking forward to seeing Google will take up this challenge and surpass Amazon again!

Thank you!

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your patience and understanding. For now, the most beneficial action for the team is if you could all send in feedback regarding this issue with the keywords "GHT3 Unable to play RTHK radio." You can follow the steps below:

Step 1. Turn on device reports

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings > Recognition & sharing.
  5. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Step 2. Share your feedback

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Tap Feedback > tap the device you'd like to submit feedback for.
  4. To display available emails, in the "From:" section, tap the arrow on the right. Select your email address.
  5. In the feedback summary, write a brief description of your issue.
  6. Be sure to check the box for Screenshot and System logs.
  7. To submit feedback, at the top right corner, tap Send.

Another thing that is helpful is for you to send feedback about this via your Nest device. Just tell your Nest speaker to share feedback and then record your message with the keywords above. I appreciate your cooperation.

Kind regards,

Dan
