Multiple devices no longer listening.

sir_bacharach
Community Member

We have 2 Google hubs (displays), 2 Google minis and 2 Google speakers that are paired in stereo.

They all used to work fine but suddenly all but the Google speakers have stopped listening.

There is nothing to show they are even hearing the key word 'ok Google'.

The mic is not turned off on any of them.

If I turn the mic off on the mini then back on, it works again, this doesn't work for the 2 hubs/displays, I have to turn them off and back on again so that they connect. Then eventually they all stop listening again.

I can see via my router that they are attached to the network and the Google home app says they are too.

With the display I can move to the lights screen and operate my Philips smart bulbs, which I would think means that they are connected to the router via WiFi since they are zigby WiFi bulbs and not Bluetooth.

I have turned off my modem and my router an then both back on.

I have no trouble with any other wireless or wired devices in the house.

I don't think it's faulty devices, because all 4 of the devices seem to do it at the same time, they can't coincidentally all fail at the same time. And remember the two Google speakers in the living room that are paired together, they continue to function and recognise commands.

All devices are in the Google home app and show no signs of not working according to the app.

Please help, this has been going on for over a month and it's rendering my Google smart devices useless.

Hello sir_bacharach,

Thanks for reaching out.

I appreciate all the details you've shared. Since 4 of them are experiencing the same thing, let's try this step first.

  1. Unplug the Google Nest speakers from the power source together with your router. Keep them unplug for a few minutes and plug it back.
  2. Let's try moving the speakers closer to the router to test if it will show the same symptoms.
  3. Do that to each of the speakers for comparison of its behavior.

Keep me posted if you notice any changes on its behavior.

Best,

Princess

Trying this now. Unplugged them all for good luck, all Google devices and the router and modem.

Just turned in the modem after 5 minutes and the router, still to switch on Google devices as I'm having my morning coffee.

This didn not help at all. All speakers are just the same.

I have also tried factory resetting my router this morning including all settings to default and then turning off all Google devices and then back on after 5 minute's. I am extremely frustrated, please help.

Hello there,

Thanks for trying the steps. Could you please provide the cast firmware version of your Google Nest speakers?

Check the firmware version of your speaker or display

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings and then Device information.
  4. Under "Technical information," check for Cast firmware: "X.XXX.XXXXX." If the device is on Fuchsia, check for System firmware version: "X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX"

Check the version on your Nest display

  1.  Swipe up from the bottom of the display screen.
  2. Tap Settings and then About device. You should find your "Cast firmware version."
    • For Nest Hub (1st gen) and Nest Hub Max: If “Fuchsia Version” is also listed, this means your device runs Fuchsia.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Princess

Hi, here is the information of all Google devices on my network with descriptions. If it would help I can make a video of problems so you can see exactly what is happening?

The speakers/displays below all have the fault:

Kitchen display:
Fuschis version: 11.20230306.3.135
Software version: 52.94.21.547883872
Chromecast firmware version: 1.69.362882

Bedroom display:
Fuschis version: 11.20230306.3.135
Software version: 52.94.21.547883872
Chromecast firmware version: 1.69.362882

Landing mini:
System firmware version: 356012
Cast firmware version: 1.56.356012

Office mini:
System firmware version: 356012
Cast firmware version: 1.56.356012

********************

The only problem with the two Google audios below is that instead of broadcasting a message it repeats it on these speakers then thinks it's broadcasting but when the other speakers/screens are all not working properly, none of them get the message. Lately it seems to always repeat the message back to you.

Google Audio Left speaker:
System firmware version: 356012
Cast firmware: 1.56.356012

Google audio Right speaker:
System firmware version: 356012
Cast firmware: 1.56.356012

****************

No problems with Google TV.

Living Room Google TV 4k:
Cast firmware: 1.61.329909

Bedroom Google TV:
Cast firmware: 1.61.329909

I've had a similar/same issue the last few weeks. I have several Nest Audio speakers, a Nest Mini, Nest Hub Max, Home Max speakers all of which worked fine for, well, forever. No changes at all have been made to my home wifi, network or modem settings and all of a sudden my google speakers all start playing up at the same time. As of a few weeks ago, sometimes just individually or half the house at a time, they would stop responding to any voice commands and cast rquests. Sometimes it would just be 1-2 speakers, the next day all except a pair of Next Audios. I have to power cycle them to get them working again. 24 hours later, they start dropping off and stop responding yet again. Ive rebooted the modem, tried changing the modem to single band 2.4g, same issue. Set modem back to dual band, same issue. Ive factory reset every single Nest speaker, set up as new again, they work for 24 hours then start dropping off again randomly. They all worked almost flawlessly for months on end, if not years, then all of a sudden the same issue impacting different types of next speakers and display all at once.
Reaching end of frustration levels with them and ready to throw them all down the bin shute soon if I can get them all back and working like they should! H E L P! 😣☠️

I'm actually in the process of switching internet service providers in case it's a problem with their network. So I'll be gutted if I move from faster internet to slower for a 25 month contract if moving ISP doesn't even fix the problem.

The amount of people that tell me it must be something to do with my network or something I'm doing wrong is unreal.

I've not touched my network as it was working absolutely fine. But recently after the problems I've factory reset my router and all Google devices. Deleted my router account and recreated it all at default settings, even deleted my Google home within the app and then recreated a new home painstakingly adding everything back to it again.

It's been a huge pain but I've proven that it's nothing to do with my network. It's either Google, a Google update, my ONT (which has no settings so hasn't been changed by me, unless my isp rolled down an ONT update, or my ISP.

I need to get to the bottom of it though as it's winding me right up. We can't even set timers on the kitchen display for cooking etc. It was always so handy to have all these features but now they're suddenly gone.

im exact situation as you @sir_bacharach

Just to see if we have any similarities.

What router and modem do you have and what other devices other than pcs, laptops or phones do you have?

I'm with eero 6 router with some random grey box ONT/modem. It's fibre optic direct to the modem.

1000mbs.

I have 2 switches (not managed)

Hive heating

Ring Doorbell with chime

CCTV with DVR

Philips hue.

All those work properly.

Howdy, I have FTTB 100mbps, TPLink router (havent checked model) which is pretty new. Philips Hue, Sensibo Air, LG and Samsung TV's, Playstation and wireless downlights, Android and Applie phones, all of which work perfectly. Its just the speakers and display that constantly drop off and become unresponsive and need a power cycle to get going again. If Google can't acknowledge or fix it soon, im bordering on wiping them and throwing them in the trash.
