Nest Hub Max Camera Not Streaming to Apps

Kira
Community Member

I have 4 Hub Maxes in my home and for 3 of them the camera is not working so I can see what is being viewed in the Google Home or Nest apps. The green camera light is on, showing that they are currently active/filming, but nothing is streaming through to the apps. The other Hub Max is working properly, as well as my Nest Doorbell and exterior Google camera. In the apps, the view of what they are seeing is just black and they can't connect. All 4 Hub Maxes are running Fuchsia Version 9.20221010.3.176

For troubleshooting, I have already done the following:

  1. Unplugged the Hubs and left them for a few minutes before plugging them back in and letting them reboot. The camera then works in the apps, but after a bit they go back off.
  2. Unplugged the Google Fiber Wifi router from everything, let it reboot and reconnect. Once the Hubs are active again, the camera then works in the apps, but after a bit they go back off.
  3. Deleted the Google Home app from my iPhone and re-downloaded the app. Deleted the Hubs from the Google Home app, reset each Hub to factory settings, and set them up as New Devices in the Google Home app. Again, the camera then works in the apps, but after a bit they go back off.
  4. Updated the DNS of my Google Fiber Wifi router to Primary Server 8.8.8.8 and Secondary Server to 8.8.4.4

I have now spent about 5 hours troubleshooting and communicating directly with Google Help. They have not been able to provide me with any ideas of what to try besides what I have already done on my own, so I have just been doing the same things with them and nothing is working to get these cameras back working.

Has anyone else had this issue and gotten your cameras working again???

Well looks like it's finally fixed. Can't believe it but I tapped on the camera icon in the Google home app and voila! It's working finally 😁

If you don't mind me asking, what's the software version you're on?  Google Home App > Devices > Your Nest Hub > Settings (wheel in upper right corner) >Device Information.

Thx

I'm running 3.2.1.7 Google Home app. It's funny it just started early tonight when I tried accessing the camera. No reboot or nothing that I did.. I guess Google finally decided to get it together and fix this issue.

This is the firmware my Nest Hub is running. 11.20230306.3.134

Cast firmware 1.69.362882

Nest Hub Max camera still working and no camera offline crap this morning.

Sadly, that's the same release I've been on for several weeks.  The hub max(s) stayed online for a few hours and then went offline in the app again.  Rebooting the devices will bring them online for 5 to 60 minutes if that.

This is getting weirder by the day, Now I don't understand why my all of a sudden started working. I thought for sure the by this morning it was going to be offline again. But to my surprise it still up and running as of now. (Rebooting the devices will bring them online for 5 to 60 minutes if that.)That's exactly how my Nest hub max was before. The only thing I noticed yesterday, as I walked past my Nest Hub was the green camera light was on.

Same versions on my 2 as well.

1 is up and running for weeks now, it’s the first gen.

the 2nd gen is still going offline after about 10 minutes.

Google is so pathetic.

I have the following from the Google App:

App: 3.2.1.7

Display info from app:

System Firmware Version: 11.20230306.3.134

Cast Version: 1.69.362882

Display info from display:

Fuchsia: 11.20230306.3.134

Chromecast firmware version: 1.69.362882

Same problem here. I've submitted feedback via the Google home app. Current version of the Google home app I'm running is 2.67.1.8

For anyone that is still suffering from the camera offline issue, please try following the instructions at the link below.  This worked for me when nothing else has; please be aware that you will need two mobile devices of some kind, one of which must be capable of being a "WiFi Hotspot" and the other will need to have Google Home installed on it.

What an abomination.  The proposed solutions are useless.  Camera sometimes shows online briefly and then goes back to online.  Most of the time there's just a spinning over a black screen.  Really disgusted with pathetic Google support on this.  Probably will never buy another Google device after this experience

Try following the instructions in the link I posted; all I can say is, it worked for me but it is a bit of a pain.

Has anyone manageed to either find a solution for this or get a straigh answer from Google yet?

I have literally spent most of the night completely tearing my entire house apart disconnecting every google speaker, display, TV chromecast and wifi network, resetting them all, disconnecting everyone from the home app, deleting the nest and the home app off of every device, deleting the apps off of my phone, redownloading them all, completely resetting my wifi and resetting it all up only to hit the same "google can't connect" when trying to set up the camera.

I'm getting so fed up with this and ready to sell it all and move over to Amazon!

I would like to report I am having the same issue on both of my Nest Hub Max devices since April, in 2 different locations on 2 different WiFi networks. The camera feed never loads in the Nest app or Google home app, a blue circle spins over a black video screen, my Nest recognizes when voices are heard but does not record them nor record or report video; I can still video chat via Google Meet on both devices. The green LED indicating the camera is on and monitoring appears as normal on the Max Hub unit. I have tried rebooting and resetting both as well as clearing the caches on the Nest and Google Home apps, leaving the Preview program on Google Home, and restarting the apps. I have provided feedback through Google Home using the keyphrase provided in this thread.

This very much feels like a software issue that Google rolled out to the Nest Hub Max since it is not an individual Hub Max issue nor is it local to a single WiFi network or app. Any word on when an update will be rolled out to fix the issue?

Is there a fix for this issue?

I have 3 google Nest Max displays and none of them is streaming any video.

@Muddi any updates on a fix for this issue? Lot's of frustrated people here.

I have the exact same issue as the initial poster (i.e., camera on Nest Hub Max showing offline). Hard resetting the device "fixes" it for a few minutes to an hour, but it will eventually return to "camera offline" in both the GH app and the nest camera app. If it's helpful, I think this didn't start happening for my device until about 3 or so weeks ago.

I have some good news since his morning: I had noticed that I could no longer change the albums on the Google Photos slideshow that I run on my Nest Hub. So, I decided to factory reset my Hub (as I had done numerous times in the last couple of months with no success).  Of course I needed to use Google Home on my tablet to configure the Nest Hub. It turned out that there had been an update of Google Home. Don't know when that happened but the thing is that I was able to install the Nest Hub completely, including the internal camera. My Nest app now sees the camera again. So, there seems to be a fix to our problem here. Are others seeing the same change?

Unfortunately, this has been done with multiple folks here. It is hit or miss, but doesn't fix the underlying issue.

Patrician
Community Member

True it doesn't fix the underlying issue, only Google can do that and they don't seem to be capable of doing so; after nearly a month of working fine I'm back at "camera offline" again.  I tested an Echo Show 10 a while back and had no issues like this; yes, the Alexa app is a bit more clunky than Google Home but at least the hardware works.

Same issue here from Singapore as of 24 May 2023. Nest hub max.

Davyyoung

I have exactly the same issue as everyone else above. Nest Hub Max has worked fine for years but now built in Nest Camera won't work. Within the Nest app and Google Home app it just tells me that the camera is offline. All settings are as they should be and haven't changed recently. Is this fault due to a recent firmware upgrade?

Sure seems like it. Nothing resolves the issue. All suggestions failed on my attempts to fix my Nest Hub Max.

FIXED!
hard to believe but here are the basic steps.

Head over to Amazon and get a Show 8!

Seriously, Google support is like performing open heart surgery on yourself.

I have 2 Hub Max units and the camera do the same thing. Nothing works permanently. Google’s Nest integration is a catastrophic failure, and the teenage programmers know it.

I have all but given up on Google. Slowly as units die, they will be replaced with Echo devices. Echo devices have issues indeed, but nothing a spectacular blatant and the Google/Nest issues. Anyone ever ask themselves why the camera needs an assistant joining device in the first place?

the Hub is already connected! Serious brains at work here.

I have had Alexa running the show at home for over 6 months now. Nothing wrong, not once.

Google is looking like expensive garbage as of late. Think for a second folks…only on the Hub Max device this happens. No joining assistant for stand alone nest cams/door bells…none.

I suspect much like almost anything Google makes…it’s on you to come to this garbage forum and tech support for Google because they haven’t a clue.

I was once offered a 25 buck store gift card, for all my troubles. It was to expire in 30 days. 2nd week I try to use it…poof it was gone. I fee for you all. Google know about several issues with the home devices. Look up the peeling on the first Nest Hello door bell!

They know, they don’t care. Cancel the subscriptions as they are useless.

FYI

This is getting beyond a joke now. I have followed various instructions posted on this thread which has ended up with my nest aware subscription being cancelled 6 months into my annual subscription. I have also lost all of the recognised faces for my Nest doorbell. This is not good enough Google. Seriously considering moving over to a rival provider.

It’s far worse than you can imagine.

there are so many old known issues that have never been resolved regarding Google home.

I know it has its own set of issues, but I have transitioned all home duties to Alexa.
when I am able to sell Google speakers, or they simply fail, or they end up in little pieces due to the never ending frustration of ownership…I replace said product with anything else but.

they have issues with the bell and peeling of “plastic” cover. They have severe issues with casting volume to speakers from YouTube music. They know, and there is always a “fix” on the way.

I cancelled all my nest aware subs for 2 locations, because I also had Nest Hub Max at each, and the cameras are useless.

the doorbells will be replace with anything but, and each home has now had a hard wired camera system installed.

1st location got HikVision for about 1600 CAD, but no home integrations, and far to complex.

the second to my surprise was a 4K Lorex system with 8 cams, 2 that are PTZ and that was around 1400 CAD. “Alexa” show me…whatever cam…instant!

it works better in Nest Hubs than Googles own cams.

I am done with Google.

btw…

watch out for there steep discount sales, as it usually means it’s being discontinued, not supported, and stripped of functionality.

that’s Google!

good luck and sorry about grammar…big thumbs and small phone!

I am in the same situation with 3 Nest Hub Max. the quality of this service has really deteriorated over the months and considering that are not exactly cheap, I bought them for the camera monitoring and we also pay the nest aware subscription this is not a great situation at all.

Like I said,

perhaps sell them and never look back.

it pains me to know that I wasted a small fortune on Google home products.

but it’s slowly going away as I find small victories with Alexa , and anything else but Google. Google Home as ignored issues from its inception.

cancel your subscriptions as they are useless. Even Wyze camera work better…

Just keep in mind, Alexa is another evil. Especially with the current class action for privacy breach. So it may work, but at the cost of releasing your private info. Haha

Captain565
Community Member

Fair enough. Haha?

I don’t use ring anything anyway. I have moved on to the traditional NVR and Cameras, and the system is smart home ready.
Do remember that Amazon simply got caught. I am a senior level IT specialist, and can’t really announce what I do, but if anyone thinks Amazon getting caught means no one else is guilty…

Anyway, I chose the route to simply not fight with a dumb box to turn on and off certain functionality of my house. It works, and for me, that’s all that counts. Another thing I don’t miss is the annoying Google assistant repeating my command as a confirmation.

To each his own, but my 2 houses are now set it and forget it…I’m happy.

I have 2 hub max units, and 4 Nest Audio Units left. When they fail, or I sell them…I’m out. No more useless subscriptions for me. Oh yah..I still have the 1st gen Google nest hello door bells. They give me enough I for in tandem with the full NVR setup. I don’t need googles expensive, I’ll thought out integration of nest/google to install it. The new ones…not a chance!

It's now been months and don't see this being rectified so I'm selling the lot and replacing it all with Alexa! 😴😴

Captain565

I don’t blame you one bit!

I have had very little issues with Alexa.

I installed a new plug last night. The skill was already in Alexa from other plugs.

As soon as I installed it, Alexa found it and asked me what group I wanted it in.

Done with google and their garbage support.

Same issue here. Bought the Nest Hub max a week ago and the camera worked for few days then started going offline. All other Nest devices have no issues. Already sent the feedback through the Hub.
This is clearly an issue with Google Nest.
