Nest mini wifi set up issues

Kory
Community Member

Daughter just got a new nest mini. Having trouble connecting to the internet. When I get to that step, it just freezes. I've waited about an hour and nothing happens. I've restarted the nest. I've reinstalled home on my phone. I've set the nest right next to my router. I have triple checked my Wi-Fi password. Any suggestions?

Hi Kory,

Thanks for posting and doing some troubleshooting steps. Let's get this sorted out.

Quick question — were there any recent changes to the network? Have you tried using a different mobile device? Also, try setting up the Nest Mini using hotspot and let's see if that works?

Keep me posted.

No changes to the network recently.  I tried using my wife's phone to set it up using the Home app (thinking maybe the issue was my phone).  That did not work.  I also took the nest to my work to see about setting it up on my work internet network (thinking it might be an issue with our internet).  I had the same problem.  When I get to the step of setting up the internet connection (after putting in the network password) it freezes and shows "Setting Up Internet Connection" but nothing happens.

I will try using a hotspot from my phone to see if that does anything when I get home from work.  Also, I don't know if it matters but I am using a Pixel phone to do the set up.

Hi Kory,

Thanks for trying those steps. You are right, setting up the Nest Mini on an office network or any public network will not work. When setting up using hotspot make sure to use 2 mobile devices to set up, one working as the router and the other one as the set up phone. Also, reset the device first before trying to set it up again. Here's how: https://goo.gle/32c7nIF

Hi Kory,

Thanks for updating us.

Is there a way that you can try to set up your Google Nest Mini using mobile hotspot? Let's go ahead and try that first to see if this would make any changes.

Best,

Princess

Using the hot spot has not worked. Any other suggestions?

I tried using the hot spot method this morning and it worked. But how do I get it to connect to my home wifi? Why did it work this time?

Hi Kory,

Thanks for trying that. Glad to know that it's already working using mobile hotspot. Since we have ruled out that the issue is within your home Wi-Fi set up, you can check on the following settings:

  • Check that your Google Home device is receiving power from a wall outlet. If your Google Home is receiving power, you will see a blinking white light on the back of the device.
  • Make sure that your Google Home device, wireless router, and device used to set up the Google Home (e.g. phone or tablet) are in close physical proximity to one another -- within 15 feet, if possible.
  • Please note: Networks that require you to connect through an authentication page (also called a "captive portal") are not supported by Google Home. This is typical of hotels, schools, dorms and businesses.

Configuring your Router Settings

  • Be sure to enable or disable the following router settings to allow Google Home to communicate properly with your router and network. All routers are different, so each setting may or may not appear on your particular router (or may be named differently).
  • Keep in mind that resetting or making changes to your router settings may have unintended consequences. If you need help or have questions/concerns, contact your router manufacturer or internet service provider (ISP).
  • Enable: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), multicast, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
  • Disable: AP/client isolation, virtual private networks (VPNs), proxy servers, IGMP Proxy. VPNs and proxy servers should be disabled on your computer as well (if applicable).

Let me know how it goes.

Princess
