One of my Google minis stops on the middle of a sentence

KAV

I have several Google minis. One of them has stopped in the middle of a sentence while answering a question. It has a good connection to my Google router. What can I do to fix it?

Same problem here for the past 2-3 months. Once the assistant part completes a sentence she will repeat the full answer if asked "Ok Google, Repeat". Not catastrophic, but irritating. I thought it might have had something to do with moving to full fibre but with all these queries that seems even less likely to be right.

I've been having the same issue on one of my Google Nest Points that I use in my kitchen. I've already done all of the actions specified regarding rebooting, resetting, and restarting the router.

I've recently begun sending feedback via the device whenever it cuts off while speaking.

I think Muddi is an AI/Chatbot. There is no way a real person would not recognize that people are still

having the issues AFTER following their advice.

All we can hope to do is that the DEVs get to it eventually and fix it via some other stealth update.

Same thing here. Working wonderful for a year or two and then kaput. Doesn’t respond to the question like it used to (“I don’t understand the question”. But you used to).  Stops mid sentence constantly. I’m in IT and this smacks of bad backend or coding or a terrible firmware update. NOT user issue which all of the recommended solutions keep indicating. My Alexa based TV is working perfectly in answering all of the questions that Google used to be able to answer, and in complete sentences. What happened Google?  Did you decide to hire a bunch of the original Siri developers from Apple, or take their playbook to blame the customers?  Undo whatever “improvements” you did, fix it, or send us all new devices.

I’m an original and longtime supporter of Google before it was even in the public sphere. This is the worst that I’ve seen ever and a step backwards. Please fix it soon to keep our faith and confidence in you.

Hey Koolhatz,

I don't have a fix for the cutting out of the reply yet except to say "Hey Google repeat". Then it'll usually complete the response. But the I don't understand the question part I find that unplugging the unit for a few seconds to reboot it fixes it for me. I hope that helps you. But yeah still waiting for Google to respond to the cutting out part. SUPER FRUSTRATING!!

Will an Alexa speaker work the same in communicating with my S21 phone? Reminders?  Does it still use YouTube Music? (which used to be Google music).

Every device I have is Andriod. Including Samsung smart tvs.

I too work in IT and this is a classic case of "unintended features" rolled out in a firmware or product patch. Not sure if this is related to some court ordered removal of unlicensed features due to some court case or not. My guess is that most users that are dealing with these issues are just dealing and not reporting them at all.

I wish there was some option NOT to install patches or updates, or some link to patch notes so we can see what is going on with the devices. But like everything else in tech these days, we are moving to a model where we are only "renting" functionality.

This is happening to me as well. Recently my Google Home keeps cutting off mid-sentence when I ask her questions. It's extremely frustrating. Sometimes she responds normally.

I've had this problem for months. I unplugged, reinstalled, reset, etc per all the suggestions to no cure. Finally, I went through all the settings on the mini speaker experimenting and disabling the "ULTRASOUND SENSING" seems to have fixed the problem. Settings>Recognition & sharing>Ultrasound Sensing = OFF. I do not know why this is on. I did not intentionally set this value. I believe it happened after an update because my system was working fine and I made no alterations and then suddenly it quit functioning which I believe coincided with an update.

Hey folks,

@wajobo8: Thanks for updating the Community forum of your resolution — it's a big help!

My apologies for the lack of updates here. I just wanted to check if anyone still has this issue on their Home Minis? Have you tried the steps provided by @wajobo8? Feel free to update the thread, and happy to lend a hand.

A week or so later. It helped but did not completely fix the issue. Instead of the response having false starts or not responding at all, 100% of the time, it has improved by disabling the ultrasound sensing. Now it responds about 80% of the time. And, about 20% of the time requiring multiple "hey google" or stopping mid-word. Time to switch to Alexa, I think.

Thank You. Quite frankly this is SO annoying as to render it useless and tarnishes trust in all of Google Home - that if there is not a remedy soon I am probably going to give myself the gift of Alexa for Christmas. But I hate to give Bezos more money. OMG I'm contemplating Cortana. Seriously - I am looking elsewhere. This is not a threat. But, Google does not seem to be taking this seriously enough or even see it as a priority issue.

Please don't mark your post as a solution -- it has no solutions.

This issue and others with the Google Home have been ongoing for a very long time.  It's disgraceful that Google Home has no support.  This could be such a cool device but the bugs and lack of support really kill the quality. Very bad look for Google.

Unbelievable.
You come back to the thread to mark it as solved while stating that it has STILL not been solved?

Hello,

Are there any updates on this? I had 2 Google Homes doing the same thing. I recently bought a new Google Nest Mini Gen 2 because I was tired of the issue and that one was doing the same thing. My network is behind a Watchguard Firewall but when watching traffic from the Google device, all traffic is being allowed.

Thanks!

The issues are all networks and all speakers- 1st generation and on.

Ok, understood. Appreciate the clarification!

I didn't find the steps @wajobo8 wrote...lost me after Settings and didn't have the next steps available in my Google home app.

Anyway, why are you asking? Why hasn't Google fixed this issue?  For me, the last couple months it happens less often. Not gone but not daily.

Thanks WAJOBO.  It's sad the community has to do the leg work and troubleshooting for Google.   I assume the Devs/Coders get paid for this?   Google, Just an FYI ....we don't.  I'll give  Muddi props for at least communicating,  but it really doesn't mean much anymore.

Rant aside-  Is this for the minis??    I've enabled-disabled  "continued conversation" and " presence sensing" in the past.  Could you please share where you found that setting?   I can't even find "Ultrasound sensing",  Google's instructions to find it are either not correct or updated:   https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9509981?hl=en#zippy=%2Cgoogle-nest-mini

I've more or less given up that this will ever be fixed, and laugh when they send news of upcoming devices or roll out of features.  In the scheme of things, finishing sentences is not a life or death problem.  But does let me know I'd never trust the Google-sphere with my thermostat or any other essential home control.  If you can't do the small stuff....

Besides never fixing this issue, I'm amazed how bad  and convoluted the App design is- with it's non-intuitive and almost manic nested menus.  I've got tons of other smart devices from smaller companies whose UI  are so much cleaner, (and updated and FIXED regularly...)   I would expect better from Google.   I'm heavily invested now, but giving serious thought to cutting my losses and jumping ship.

It is for the minis.  Google Home app - the device  - Settings>Recognition & sharing>Ultrasound Sensing = OFF. I can't remember but I believe it appeared with an app update. Speaking of which - my minis won't update to the latest version. Plugged in, reset, yada, yada.

You are right - it's not life or death but it's not trustworthy - therefore useless.

Thanks!!  I started actively posting back  in January(! )  with the " Hey google repeat that " solution and "send feedback".  I'll give this a shot, but I'm way over doing work for "the team".

After almost a year, the lack of any real response tells me all I need to know.   I'll  use it for lights and such while that part still works,  but will look for other options.

This is ridiculous I haven't had my google nest that long and I ask it a question and when it ask me if I want a little more contents it quites on me every time now I have unplugged it for several minutes and everything there is a malfunction I need to know what to do ?

Has anything positive been resolved to correct the issue of stopping in mid sentence?

Nope. I had noticed it happening less but, yesterday started again quite a few times.

Fladge

Still happening here.  Maybe a little less frequently though.
Can't believe how long it's taking.

This has started happening to me as well.  All rebooted.  All connected.  But google has decided to randomly cut out on various of my 9 devices when she wants to.

mpompey
Community Member

The only remedy I have right now, is saying "Hey Google, please repeat." That usually works about 80% of the time.

I am having the same problem.  Google nests stops in mid sentence.  This happens on all of my 4 nest minis.

So the fix for me was to create a "STEREO PAIR" with my kitchen speaker and my living room speaker.  The settings for this is under "SETTINGS (Gear Icon Top Right)", "AUDIO (Under Device Features)", then "Stereo Pair (Top Left)".  Once I created the "Pair" it seemed to fix my issue.  This may not be practical for everyone, but in a smaller setting with multiple speakers it seemed to fix my issue with that particular speaker stopping in mid-sentence.

Good luck...

wow, okay, will try!

My Settings in the Google Home App doesn't have "Device Features" so I couldn't get to Audio.

But actually, all of my speakers are already paired. When it's playing in one room and I'm heading to a different room, I ask it to move whatever it's playing to the room I'm going to be in and it does. I would think if they weren't paired, switching rooms wouldn't work.

"Stereo pair" is linking two speakers as a "left" and "right" speaker for stereo audio.

I have the exact same issue, nothing has worked. I had it connected via bluetooth to my PC and noticed the audio kept cutting out and therefore pausing what I was watching. I turned off bluetooth and reset the device only to notice that even if I say "hey google, what's the time", it still cuts out halfway through a sentence.

I've have the same issue on both of my Home Minis daily, for ~6-8 months now, 100% weather report failure every morning, repeatedly when re-asked, and have reported it until I was blue in the face (search "sentence truncated" too in your logs if you're really interested in my feedback).

Since I have purchased a number of Amazon devices (Ring doorbells that included free echoes) I have now started using that instead.

It is sad that a company the size of Google cannot fix devices they have effectively broken with updates, and is unwilling to roll back, I assume probably because of the Sonos legal case.

I will continue to gradually move away from the Google ecosystem because of this and similar issues that are gradual degradation to their functionality (such as phrase accuracy decreasing, being given wrong answers - not searches, failing to identify users, despite having done so a few second prior etc).

Ironically it was once immediately after giving feedback for this issue on device once that it said "thanks, every little bit of feedback helps!" that I quipped "but it doesn't though does it?'. To which it replied "you're right'. That's the most accurate thing I've heard from it in months.

After three years and 10 Google Minis,  bit the bullet and replaced all with Alexa a few months ago.   A little time to reimplement automation and get used to a few changes but all in all... it just works now.

Do you mind sharing if you have an Android phone?  I have Galaxy S21...wondering about Reminders communication. Also YouTube music?

Yeah. I think I am done with Google. Tangentially, I'm really disappointed in a lot of Google products. Seems they are too big and not taking care of their multitude of problems across apps and product - maps and navigation are abysmal - replaced with Waze app, etc. Time to switch.

Yeah?!? What Stacey Jill said, when was the fix? Mine just did it last night and now it's happening on my phone too. I have S21 Ultra and I have all my updates up to date. PLEASE HELP!!!

This has still not been fixed. This is a far bigger issue than you think it is google. One read through this thread would have any CEO/board member want a fix pushed asap; lots of customers deciding they’re abandoning ship for competitors - word of mouth is more effective than realized by this company.
