Spotify playing the wrong song

When I ask my google home mini to play “shake it off” by Taylor Swift it used to play a fan made versions by “t-swizzle” so on Spotify I clicked to not play that song ever. Now when I ask google to play that song it plays Waka Waka by Shakira which isn’t even remotely close. It even says “sure playing shake it off by Taylor swift” and then proceeds to play the shakira song. I can manually cast the song with no issues.

Hello mckinley146114,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

I understand the feeling when you're having issues playing music on your Google Home Mini. A few questions: do you have a premium account with Spotify? When did the issue start? Does the same thing happen when you use the Google Assistant app on your phone?

Please note that users with Spotify Premium account, can play content on demand, hear specific songs, albums, and/or artists along with music based on: genre, mood, activity, Spotify’s curated playlists, and personal playlists. If you don't have a premium account, you can hear a station of songs inspired by the content you asked for. Click here to learn more.

Cheers,

Muddi

Yes I have premium. It works for a lot of songs but certain songs it cannot figure it out even close. I tried again today for shake it off by Taylor swift and normally it plays Waka Waka by Shakira but instead it played the pitch perfect song cups. We just decided to listen to it, and then after that Shake It Off by Taylor Swift came on. I don’t use the google assistant app on my phone so I don’t know, but even if it did work that way it defeats the purpose of being able to talk to my speaker when I’m doing something. I don’t want to have to have my phone

Hey mckinley146114,

Please try to unlink and relink your Spotify account before requesting to play songs again. Here's how: open the Google Home app > Tap on Add icon at the top left > Choose Music > Tap on No default > Select the Unlink option below Spotify > Unlink. Do the same steps to relink.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Lovely

Just did this and no change. It started playing Let it Go from frozen this time when I asked it to play Shake it Off by Taylor Swift. It still acknowledges that I want to play shake it off by saying “sure playing shake it off by Taylor swift” but it then never plays that song

Hello mckinley146114,

I'll take note of that. If you haven't already, factory reset and set up your Google Home Mini again. Move it to another room if the issue persists. Here's how you can do that: open the Google Home app > Tap on the speaker icon > Choose Settings > Device information > Placement > Choose a different room > Follow the on-screen prompts.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Lovely

Hey there,

I wanted to follow up and see if you still need help. Please let me know if you are still having any concerns or questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Regards,

Dan

Did it and still no change. It cannot for the life of it figure out how to play shake it off when I ask. It always plays a random song even though it says it’s playing shake it off. I’ve factory reset, rebooted, changed rooms. This is clearly not an issue with my device. It’s an issue with google, a bug that they need to fix because tons of us are having wrong song playback issues.

Hi mckinley146114,

Thanks for trying. To further isolate, would it be okay if you could try other music services like YouTube Music? You can change the default music service by following the steps below:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. At the top right, tap your account.
  4. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap the triangle next to the Google Account, then tap another account or Add another account.
  5. Go back to the home screen, and at the top left, tap Add > Music.
  6. To choose your default service, tap the music service you'd like to use. Assistant will use this service when you say “Hey Google, play music.”
  7. To link functionality:
    • For YouTube, your account is automatically linked when you link your Google Account to your speaker or display.
    • For Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and others, you'll need to link your accounts.
      • To connect your account, tap a music service > Link account > sign in or sign up for the service and follow the in-app steps.
      • To unlink an account, tap Unlink > Unlink account.

Note: For all services, speakers and displays currently support a single account per streaming service.

Listen to music on speakers and displays.

Also, you can unlink the Spotify account from your Google Home app and uninstall the Spotify app. Reinstall it and relink the Spotify account to your Google Home app and see if the issue persists.

Best regards,

Dan

I don’t have any other premium paid music services so that wouldn’t help if YouTube music worked. I’ve already unlinked and relinked my Spotify to my google home mini and it did nothing. It works with most songs I ask it to play, but some it just can’t do it even though it used to. Again this is not a device issue. It’s a bug google is going to have to go in and fix.

Hey there mckinley146114,

I hear you. Help us isolate this further. Would you be able to reach out to Spotify to gain more information as to why only certain songs or artists aren’t playing? Google relies heavily on the features other apps and services have. Reach out to them and tell us how it goes.

Best regards,

Dan
