Spotify stutters when seeking or advancing [bluetooth speakers only]

Jehsom
Community Member

When I play Spotify from my Google Nest Hub to bluetooth speakers, the music stutters and backs up every time I seek or advance the track. It is jarring every time I start a new track to hear it start, pause, then jump back and start again.

This happens whether I'm using Spotify connect from my iPhone or I'm driving it from the built-in Spotify app. The problem goes away when I disconnect the bluetooth speakers and play from the device itself.

Please see the two videos I've made to demonstrate the issue:

Hey Jehsom,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue here. My apologies for the late response.

I know how it feels when you're having issues playing music on your Google Nest Hub. Let's dig deeper - when did the issue start? Does it happen with specific songs or albums only? Does it happen when you connect a different device to your speaker via Bluetooth? Have you tried other music services? How far is your Google Nest Hub from your router? Also, please check the current firmware and operating system version of your device.

Please try these steps below:

  1. Move your Nest Hub within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network.
  2. Reboot your Nest Hub and router by disconnecting them from the power source and leave them unplugged for 1 minute. Once done, plug them back one at a time with intervals.
  3. Check if you still have the same issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

@Muddi

With regard to your initial questions:

1. The issue started a few months ago. It was first happening only on my friend's android device when she played with spotify connect, but now it happens on all devices including playing spotify from the nest hub itself (no phone involved).

2. Happens with all songs.

3. Yes, same problem occurred when I put different bluetooth speakers on it.

4. Tested mixcloud, youtube, and pandora. While Mixcloud and Pandora have their own issues, it is not this issue.  Spotify is the only one that has this issue.

5. My router is right around the corner so it is not a problem with that. Remember, it is only a problem when connected to bluetooth speakers, so it's not indicative of a wifi problem. I did try rebooting my router and the nest hub but no dice, still does the same thing.

6. Nest Hub Firmware 290464. Cast firmware 1.56.290464.

Thanks for any insight or help you can provide.

Hey Jehsom,

Thanks for that information. Please try these steps below that may help us isolate the issue further:

  1. Remove or forget the Bluetooth device from the paired list of all previously paired devices.
  2. Unpair the Bluetooth device from its current pair, then pair it with the speaker. To pair:
    1. Open the Google Home app.
    2. Select the speaker that the customer would like to pair with their Bluetooth device.
    3. At the top-right, tap settings >  Audio > Default music speaker > Pair Bluetooth speaker.
    4. Tap the Bluetooth device the customer would like to pair, then select Done.
  3. Reboot both devices then try to pair again.
  4. Reinstall the Google Home app.
  5. Perform a Factory Data Reset (FDR) on the speaker and try to pair again.

Keep us posted.

@Muddi Sorry for the delayed response -- I've been super busy.

I've done these steps several times to no avail, which makes sense because it is not a problem with the bluetooth device or the google home app. I say this because the problem occurs with different bluetooth devices and also occurs when the phone is not involved in the playback at all.

Thanks.

Hi, I am having g the exact same problem. Also, I have tried every suggested solution. If I play Spotify directly on my laptop, there is no stutter whatsoever, so I have concluded that it is not a Spotify issue. It's not a wi-fi problem either. I have a Google Point directly next to my Google Mini (Point bluetooth, if there is one, is useless) and my bluetooth speakers directly next to the point which is operating properly. It's extremely frustrating!!

Hey pianatuna,

Thanks for that information. To confirm, is it happening to all of your devices or just on your laptop?

@Muddi I had to abandon the setup with the Hub connected to the bluetooth speakers because the stuttering was not acceptable. So if I am to complete the troubleshooting process it will take a little more time for me to reconnect speakers and do it. Please give me another week before you close the thread. Thanks.

I have the same issue.

Playing Spotify via Nest Mini to bluetooth speakers. Everytime a new song comes up, it stutters.
In home assistant the status of the Nest Mini briefly changes to buffering and than goes back to playing.

Hey Conjabi,

Thanks for responding. Sorry to hear that you're having the same issue on your Nest Mini. Could you share some of the steps that you've done. Also, how far is your Nest Mini from the router?

I have:

-Restarted the Nest Mini
-Dis/re connected my spotify account
-Tried other bluetooth speaker

And did the steps given above:

  1. Remove or forget the Bluetooth device from the paired list of all previously paired devices.
  2. Unpair the Bluetooth device from its current pair, then pair it with the speaker.
  3. Reboot both devices then try to pair again.
  4. Reinstall the Google Home app.
  5. Perform a Factory Data Reset (FDR) on the speaker and try to pair again.

I feel like the problem might lay in the way Spotify is being buffered. As if the next song is not being buffered before the current song ends. Its only at the very very beginning of a new song. I have no after the initial stutter.  The initial stutter is a faction of a second of sound from the next song, then a sudden very short stop en then it resumes. During this stutter Home Assistant says the nest is buffering,

Edit:
This initial stutter is also there when playing from youtube music

Hey Conjabi,

Sorry for the delays. Thanks for sharing that information. To confirm, do experience the same issue when your playing Spotify music from your phone to Bluetooth speaker? How about when your Google Nest Mini is connected to another Bluetooth speaker? What is the current firmware version of your Nest Mini?

Keep us posted.
