Still no Gemini LLM integration--what is happening??

primes2357

It's unbelievable to me that I spent as much money as I did on Google Nest / Home devices, yet there is still absolutely no way to integrate Gemini LLM with the ecosystem. WHAT? WHY? Explain this to me, please. I'm so mad about it, and I'm reminded every time I say "hey Google" to one of these super-low-IQ devices.

Speaking to this expensive Home/Nest device feels so frustrating... it is a truly terrible experience. Yet I can access Gemini on a cheap Raspberry Pi for practically nothing. What a juxtaposition. Remind me: why did I spend money on Nest Home again?

Why not a simple service with an API key I can plug in to get the party started? Just give me a hacky "Works With Google" service I can install in Google Home and slap an API key in.

You're GOOGLE for heaven's sake. Practically unlimited resources, money, tens of thousands of employees; yet this is clearly not a priority? It's infuriating, and I would certainly think twice about EVER spending money on Google hardware again, if this is the kind of device /ecosystem support I can expect. Do you think APPLE would ever make this kind of misstep? No way. You can do better.

Google: what do you have to say for yourself? I'm extremely disappointed. I challenge you to win me back.

Google Assistant has been getting noticeably worse every month for several years now.

Google has recently discontinued several Nest products and services, including Nest Secure and the first-generation Nest Aware subscription. They are also unifying their efforts around third-party connected home devices under the Google Assistant platform. Google continues to offer various Nest products like thermostats, cameras, and displays, which integrate with the broader Google ecosystem.

Here's a more detailed look at what Google is doing with Nest:

Discontinuation and Transitions:

Nest Secure:

Google officially shut down Nest Secure, their home security system, on April 8, 2024, according to Reviewed.

Nest Aware (1st Gen):

New subscriptions for the first-generation Nest Aware service were discontinued on July 13, 2023, according to Google Help.

Unification of Smart Home Platform:

Google is focusing on a single, unified experience for smart home devices through the Google Assistant, which is accessible through their Nest devices.

Because its an awful system.  Home was  significantly better a few years ago. They pulled support to focus on gemini and left assistant to languish.  Now instead of one useful assistant they have 2 awful ones

My Google Home Mini's are continuously getting worse. Connection problems 50%+ of the time. Heard but not responsive in any way but a blink of the LED; Breaking up in the middle of a sentence... All kinds of misbehaviors...

Please Google. I can't bear the nest device anymore. I just use Gemini on my pixel all the time. Maybe it's time to unplug the nest hub.

Let’s be real, Google left the Nest Hub for dead a long time ago, they just forgot to send the memo. Gemini is never coming, not now, not later, not ever. It is not a delay, it is not a rollout issue, it is physically impossible. The hardware cannot handle it, period.

But you know what is really bold? Google is still happily selling these devices like nothing is wrong. No warning, no heads-up, just “here is your future-proof smart display”, except the future clearly does not include it.

If the plan is to move on to new hardware, fine, but have the decency to tell people. Leaving users hanging while still cashing in on dead-end products is not just bad support, it is false advertising.

Google says Matter is the future, but here is the thing: honesty matters too

This thread is nearly 2 months old.

No replies from Google.

Nobody is paying attention.

Nobody cares.

...a day will come where it's simply unthinkable for a company to stay in business while behaving this way.

Why are we even surprised. I cut as much google out of my life as possible. Every time they launched a service over the last 10 years I got it--google podcasts? move over Acast. In every instance it was a mistake. They will abandon their users because the only thing this company cares about is ad revenue, nothing else. Want a smarthome product, go to a company that earns 90% of its revenue from smarthome products--not a search monopoly that dabbles in new product formats for fun.

Hey Google,

No excuses, no vagueness, just clarity:
Is Gemini coming to Nest/Home devices, yes or no?

If not, give us an alternative, an upgrade program, or open API access.
Investing in your hardware for years only to be ignored isn’t “innovation,” it’s customer neglect.

The community isn’t asking for magic, we’re asking for respect. And that starts with honesty.

It feels pretty strange that Google’s most advanced AI model, Gemini, can be accessed on cheap hobbyist hardware but not on the very devices Google sells as their “smart home” flagships. You’re right — it is a weird mismatch between potential and actual user experience.

There are probably a few reasons for this delay — some technical, some business-related:

  • Privacy & safety concerns – Real-time LLMs like Gemini need to process a lot of conversational data. Google may be extra cautious about rolling this out to always-on devices in people’s homes.

  • Server cost & latency – Running Gemini isn’t cheap, especially at the scale Nest/Home devices would require.

  • Ecosystem priorities – Honestly, it looks like Google’s putting more focus on web/mobile Gemini experiences before deeply integrating it into smart home devices.

That said, I agree there should at least be a “developer mode” or an API key option for those willing to test and experiment. Let advanced users unlock more power from their own devices — kind of like how browsers let you install custom themes and tweaks from outside the official store.

Speaking of customization — I run gthemes.org, where I share ways to personalize your digital experience, including Microsoft Edge & Chrome theme guides. The same principle applies here: people love personal control over their tech. Whether it’s a browser or a smart home device, giving users more flexibility keeps them loyal and engaged.

Google could learn from that — open things up, let people experiment, and the community will make your products even better.

Until then, yeah… I’d be just as annoyed if I had expensive hardware that couldn’t use the brand’s most exciting tech.

New update: Starting October, Google will roll out Gemini to Nest.

Yes. Gemini for Home will replace Assistant on existing Nest speakers and displays via a software/service update, no new hardware needed. Early access starts in October 2025.

Hopefully! I'm tired of the stupid answers I get. Looking forward to it!
