Telling speaker to stop music stream after time interval has no effect

HolgerWeiß

Setting a "sleep timer" while listening to music no longer has any effect, e.g. (actually using German language):

  1. Hey Google, play <radio station> (spiel <Radiosender>).
  2. Hey Google, stop in two minutes (in zwei Minuten beenden).

The second command is acknowledged by the speaker (and visible in my activity logs), but the music stream isn't stopped.  This worked just fine until a few weeks ago (maybe with the previous firmware version?).

I can reproduce the problem reliably (i.e., it never works) on several Nest Audio and original Home devices, all of them are running current firmware (324896).  The problem occurs with different kinds of music streams (e.g., TuneIn, Deezer, or music casted from my Pixel phone).  However, other kinds of timers work just fine (e.g., alarms, or "hey Google, switch off lights in two minutes").

Hi @HolgerWeiß

Hundreds of people have already reported this. There are many, many threads about it. Google have at times been merging new threads reporting this bug with one of the originals which has been locked. It affects all google sound devices.

It may have coincided with firmware release 324896, but as users we are only guessing. Google will not say other than they are aware of the bug.

Consequently a fix is awaited. When, nobody knows.

The nearest thing that can be done is not a solution so not perfect but a kind of temporary workaround as follows.

Create a Routine on the Google Home app with a single action command of 'Stop Playing'. Additionally create a starter on the routine for when you want the routine to action of a set time of day, e.g. for instance at 23:00 or of course whatever time would be more suitable. Then the music or sleep sounds will stop when the routine activates at that set time every day or night. Not perfect but the best you can do until this very annoying bug is fixed.

Alternatively create this type of routine
Create a 'Personal' routine, (Note this does not work with 'Household' routines)
Give it an activation keyword of something like 'Thirty' as an example.
Click on 'Add Action'
At the bottom you will see the option of 'Delay start', click on this
Enter the time to delay as 30 minutes
After this you will then see an entry for 'After 30 min'
Add an action after that entry of just 'Stop playing'
If you want an audio response to confirm that the routine will be actioned simply enter an Announcement command BEFORE the 'After 30 min' line of 'Stopping in 30 minutes'.
Then when you say 'hey google thirty' it should respond with 'Stopping in 30 minutes' and 30 minutes later the music will stop.

Heh, I searched the web and this forum before posting, seems I failed miserably at that 😀

Many thanks for your reply, and the suggested workarounds.

Hi @HolgerWeiß

If your interested, this is the main thread.

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Assistant-no-longer-stops-playing-after...

It's a bit confusing now though since lots of different threads have been merged into it over the past weeks so it can be a little difficult to follow at times.

Hi folks,

@Kadven, thanks for the help.

@HolgerWeiß, apologies for the inconvenience. Our team is aware about timers/sleep timers that aren’t working for turning off music at the specified time and are still working on a fix. For news and updates about sleep timers, keep an eye on the recommended answer on the main thread. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to start a new one for I will be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Kind regards,

Dan
