Hello there,
I got two questions regarding how Google Assistant would react to my voice command on turning some lights on or off. Wondering if those are working as intended or unexpected edge cases.
Take a simplified version of my home as an example, there are 3 rooms:
- Living room with 1 Nest Hub. Nothing else.
- Bedroom with 1 Nest Hub, and 3 lights, called "ceiling light" (type set to light), "night lite (not a typo)" (type set to outlet), "floor thing" (type set to light).
- Garage with 1 light, called "A".
Here's the questionable behavior that I observed:
- Upon speaking to my bedroom Nest Hub with "turn on the lights", it turns on all "ceiling light", "night lite", and "floor thing". My question is, I intentionally set the name "night lite" to avoid light detection, but it still got controlled anyway, probably due to same pronunciation. Is this expected behavior? Is there a way to set my night light to some name that can avoid light detection?
- If I speak to living room speaker, "turn on the lights", it turns on every single light in my house, which includes lights in the bedroom and garage. Is this the expected behavior, or the action should result in "sorry, there's no lights set up in living room..."?

Hey cyclost,
Thanks for visiting the Community.
To answer your questions, when you give the command "Turn on/off the lights," your Google Nest Hub will only turn on/off the lights in the room you're currently in unless you specify a room name. I don't see an issue with the Nest Hub, it's more on the name assigned on your lights. It's best to change the names and make them unique, avoiding names with similar sounds to prevent issues when controlling smart devices via voice command.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Muddi

Hello there,
We haven’t heard back from you, so I'll be locking this thread in 24 hours. Feel free to create a new one if you have other concerns in the future.
Best,
