"turn on" is starting a song instead of turning on the device

I have a light called "Dad's light" but recently when I ask Google to turn on dads light, it starts playing a song called Dad's light that was recently released on Spotify.   If I also say which room the light is in, the command works but it's annoying.  Can I adjust commands so that "turn on" only applies to starting devices and won't start music?  I even tried to create a routine to override but it didn't help

Hi @Willnedw

Thank you for reaching out to the community! I understand you're having some issues with the commands on your Google Devices. Don't worry about it! I'm here to help you.

Before we move forward with the troubleshooting steps, I need to know a little bit more information about your device to provide you with more accurate information:

  • When did the issue start?
  • What type of device do you have? (e.g., Google Home, Nest Hub, etc.)
  • Did you try any troubleshooting steps?
  • What app are you using? (e.g., Google Home app, Assistant app)

Once you have this information, I'll be ready to assist you further!

Best regards,

Debora

Hi Debora,

  • This issue started roughly a month ago.
  • I am using google home devices, (Nest Hub and google speakers
  • I tried creating a routine to override the basic voice commands and renaming the light.  If I change the name to something else, the "Turn on" command works.  It's only when I change the name back to "Dads Light" which is also a song name that I have the issue.  If I include "in the livingroom", the voice command works but I don't have to specify rooms for any other devices when turning them on.
  • This happens when using the voice command "Turn on" from any of my google assistant enabled devices

Any other troubleshooting steps you can suggest would be greatly appreciate

Hi @Willnedw

Thanks for sharing the requested information! In this case, your Google devices seem to be detecting the incorrect command. To resolve this, I recommend visiting the following website:

In the section "Control your home > Lights," you'll find recommendations for commands you can try. Additionally, you can try renaming the specific lights or adding the command "Turn on" to be more specific with the action.

I hope this helps! If not, please let me know, and I'll be more than happy to assist you further.

Best regards,

Debora
