4k Chromecast with Google TV - Casts keep pausing and stopping

Hi, this is a problem that has been going on for a long time and is driving me nuts.

I have a 4k Chromecast with Google TV and when i try to cast media, (Twitch, Soundcloud are the two with the most problems) the stream keeps pausing and stopping. The playbar on the originating device says it's still playing, but no audio or video on the chromecast itself.

The Chromecast appears responsive, I can use the remote and browse through the menus and open other apps, but the device that started the cast (tried a Windows 10 desktop PC, a Pixel 6/8/9 phone, and a Pixel Tablet) says it's casting and playing when it's very obviously not.

The Chromecast is hard wired with Ethernet but it also happens on WiFi as well. I tried to use the Chrome / Chromecast debugging to see if I can capture any log files and see what's going on but it wants me to pay $5 to enable debugging.

I've tried the simple things, like using a rebooting, making sure all devices are updated, toggling the network settings in the troubleshooting guide in the pinned post and none of it works.

Hi @poots,

Thank you for your timely post and the comprehensive information you've provided.

I'm sorry to hear that you're encountering issues when you try to cast to your Chromecast with Google TV (4K) device, which keeps pausing and stopping. I understand how frustrating this can be. Don't worry, I'm here to help you troubleshoot and find a solution together.

To assist you with the best solution, I would like to get a bit more information:

  • When did the issue start?
  • Have you ever casted before without any video quality issues?
  • Have you tried using the Chromecast on a different TV? Does it show the same behavior?
  • What is the make and model of your TV?
  • Do you have your Google Home app updated?
  • Are the devices connected to the same network?
  • How far is the TV when trying to cast?

Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Jeremy

Hi @poots

Thank you for your timely response and the comprehensive information you've provided.

We will be troubleshooting your Chromecast device with Google TV (4K) in the following manner:

Check that the casting device is updated:

  • Setting
  • Use network information.
  • Continue

Clear cache.

  • On the phone or tablet, go to Settings, Device, Apps, All.
  • Scroll down and touch Google Play Movies.
  • Tap Clear data, then tap OK.
  • Tap Clear cache.

Reboot the streaming device.

  • Remove the streaming device from the power source.
  • Leave the device unplugged for one minute, then plug it back in.

Or you can do that as well on the Google Home app.

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap favorites or devices
  • Select the streaming device
  • Tap settings and reboot.

From Google TV

  • Go to All settings.
  • System.
  • Select Restart.
  • Select Restart again to confirm.

Reboot casting device

  • Turn the device off.
  • Wait several seconds.
  • Turn it back on.
  • Reboot your WiFi and wait for 2 minutes.

Disconnect and reconnect the casting device from the WI-FI.

  • On the casting device, toggle the Wi-Fi off, then on.
  • Make sure the device reconnects to the same WiFi network that the Chromecast is connected to.
  • If the issue persists, you can proceed with a factory data reset and follow the steps. How to factory reset your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer

Thank you for your attention. I await your response.

Sincerely,
