Cast Moderator setup inconsistency

We are seeing inconsistency on setting up Cast Moderator on our new 4k devices. Some devices act exactly like we want them to and you can only run Cast Moderator or Settings on the device. You can't get to the home screen that gives access to all the other apps on the device. Then some devices still allow you to access the device unrestricted.

It seems to be something with the update versions.  Ver:1.4.697533439 dated Oct 18, 2024, makes this locked down operation the feature set. You basically can only use the moderator app (again, we want that). However ver: 1.4.720760385, dated Feb 10, 2025 gives you access to the Home Screen (we want to disable that). No rhyme or reason that we can find as to why some devices see the Oct24 ver and some see the Feb25 version.    

Both devices, running each different version also report they are up to date and no updates available. So the devices that updated to the Oct.24 version, don't see the Feb.25 version to update too...    The devices that updated to the Feb.25 version, only saw it as an update options.  Both devices had the same operating version on them out-of-the-box.

There is no managability of these devices in Google Enterprise Admin (although that warnings on Google TV screens indicate there should be some type of manageability)

Does anyone have a suggestion of how to get the devices on the same version that will lock the device into Moderator only mode?

  • What kind of account are you using for the cast moderator? Is it a personal Gmail or a managed Google account, like for school or work?
  • Which devices don't show the home screen with all the apps, and which ones still let you access everything?

managed accounts in my google admin console

we purchased all 5 Google ChromeCast w/4k devices at the same time

set them all up the same way.

even if we log them ALL into the same managed account, we still have inconsistent use as described above.. the only differences are 1) the serial numbers (obviously) and 2) the software versions the device updates to
