Chromecast defined in Home as previously registered by different user even after factory reset

My internet was out during the day, and when i got home  none of my streaming apps are able to connect to my chromecast. I tried on Home, but nothing.  What has worked for me before is to remove the device an re-install it in Home, but not this time. I have done an insane amount of factory reset attemtps in the last hour. But no matter what i do Home keeps saying the device has preciously been set up by a different user. I have tried restarting the router twice, unplugged everything. Any advice?

To get a better handle on what's happening with your Chromecast, could you tell me a bit more about it:

  • Which Chromecast model are you using? If you're not sure, no worries! You can find all the details in our 'Chromecast and Google TV Streamer specifications' Help Center.
  • Is your Google Home app up to date?
  • Do you have a dual-band router?
  • Is your Chromecast currently connected to the 5 GHz network?

While you're gathering that info, you could also try these steps to remove your Chromecast:

  • Directly through your Google Account:
    • Head over to Device Activity and log in to your Google account.
    • Spot your Chromecast in the list of devices.
    • Click on it, and then choose either Sign out or Remove.
  • Using the Google Home App (if you can access it):
  • Open up the Google Home app.
  • Tap and hold the Chromecast's tile.
  • Tap the Settings icon (it usually looks like a gear).
  • Look for an option like Remove device or Unlink account. If you see it, tap it and confirm.
