Chromecast from Spotify crashes Chrome browser - new problem in last 3 days

Hi all,

Windows 11 PC running Chrome browser.
I have two Chromecasts in my shed. One is a Chromecast Audio, the other is a Chromecast TV.

A few days ago there were no issues. I've returned to shed after days at work today (13 June 24) and if I open Spotify's web app in Chrome, start playing a track & then choose the casting option to cast to Google Chromecast devices, as soon as I select the Shed Group (both of above) Chrome shuts down immediately.

Things I've tried to resolve it:

- clear browser cache

- reset Chrome

- uninstalled & reinstalled Chrome

Still not resolved.
No issue if I run Spotify web app in Edge.

Any ideas what's going on?

DJ

Same problem with me this morning when I try to cast audio from a radio website to my speaker. I'm wondering if the latest Chrome update is causing the problem? Rebooting the PC and cutting power/rebooting the speaker doesn't help

I've been thinking the same regarding the recent update causing the problem. I don't think that we should need to connect our PC or phone through Bluetooth or Cast separately then using the actual option that's built into the browser! That's what it's there for and has been working fine for years now.

Hi everyone,

I hope you are well and I would like to thank you for posting on our community page, on the other hand I apologize for the inconvenience that you are having with your Chromecast. Let me tell you some troubleshooting steps that you can try to fix the problem.

Disable Chrome Extensions: (Temporary Test)

  • Try temporarily disabling all your Chrome extensions to see if one of them is causing the crash. You can disable them by going to Settings > Extensions and toggling off the switches for each extension. If Chrome starts casting to your Chromecast devices normally after disabling extensions, you can then identify the culprit by re-enabling them one by one and testing after each reactivation.

Create a New Chrome Profile:

  • Creating a new Chrome profile can isolate issues specific to your current profile. Here's a guide from Google on how to create a new profile: https://goo.gle/3z4xNSU
  • Try casting Spotify using the new profile and see if the crash persists.

Check for Spotify Web App Updates:

  • Visit the Spotify web app and see if there are any updates available. Sometimes updates can fix bugs related to casting functionality.

Disable Hardware Acceleration (if necessary):

  • Disabling hardware acceleration can sometimes resolve graphics-related issues. Here's how to disable it:
    • Go to Chrome Settings.
    • Click on "Advanced" then scroll down to "System."
    • Toggle off the switch for "Use hardware acceleration when available."
    • Restart Chrome and test casting again.

If for some reason you still have the same issue don't hesitate to let us know.

Regards,

Mario.

I've had the same issue today. We use spotify via Chrome web browser and cast to our google nest speakers throughout the office. I've spent most of the day troubleshooting with no change. When I select 'connect to a device' in spotify, then select 'google cast devices' all of my browser windows across 3 monitors shut down. No error message, no warning, just shuts down completely. I am able to restore my windows immediately. I've restarted my computer, cleared cache and cookies, updated chrome, disabled chrome extensions, checked spotify for updates (there were none), and disabled the hardware acceleration. I am not able to try a new Chrome profile or incognito window. Nothing has worked. Any other suggestions?

Same issue here, just as described by the other members.  Instantly upon selecting the "Google Cast Devices" option the the Spotify Web Player, Chrome crashes.  This worked a couple of days ago, so it just broke.  I noticed that the interface for Google Cast recently changed (it's now a "pop up window."  I suspect along with other ongoing development of this, something broke...

Hi @CateCulley,

I hope you are well and I would like to thank you for posting on our community page, on the other hand I apologize for the inconvenience that you are having with the Chrome Browser. iI also appreciate your effort in trying to troubleshoot the issue on your own. Let me tell you some troubleshooting steps that you can try to fix the problem.

1. Try a Different Casting Method:

  • Instead of casting from the Spotify web player, try using the Spotify desktop app (if available on your work computer). Check if casting from the app works without crashing Chrome.
  • If your computer supports Bluetooth, try connecting your computer to your Google Nest speaker directly via Bluetooth and play Spotify through the app or web player.

2. Report the Issue:

  • If none of the above solutions work, report the issue to both Spotify and Google.
    • Search online for how to submit a bug report to Spotify.
    • Visit and report the issue here on our Google feedback form, including the specific Chrome version and details about the crash.

Regards,

Mario.

Good morning  @alejandom,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I was able to download the spotify app for desktop, and that worked!! I appreciate your help, being the office DJ is stressful enough without buggy webpages!

Thanks again!
