Chromecast gen3 fails to mirror on Android 9 (Samsung Note 8)

I have 2 phones:

Samsung Note 8 (SM-N9500 Android 9)
Version:N9500ZHS7DUD1/N9500ZZH7DUD1/N9500ZCU7DTK1/ (2 MAY 2021)

and Samsung A71 (Android 13).

I have a Google Chromecast gen 3 I bought in 2018/19:
system firmware 292998
cast firmware 1.56.291998

I had setup Google Chromecast on my TV since 2018 and all was well with the Note 8.
Since 2020 I installed it in my holiday home and use it when I go there.

A few days ago, I noticed that the A71 can mirror its screen with no problems, but the Note behaves like so:
1. I click on the chromecast device in Google Home.
2. I see the usual 3 tiles - screensaver, volume, cast
3. I move the volume slider and it reflects on TV
4. I click Cast my screen and the TV goes black. (i see the 'cast to mirror device' popup and click 'cast screen')
5. if I now play some music or video I can hear it playing on the TV but is badly broken up or noisy/corrupted.

I have not tested any other mobile devices apart from the A71 which is flawless (Note 8 was too last I remember).

AFAIK Android 9 should still be supported right?

Hi @conandrum,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that your Chromecast (3rd Gen) is failing to mirror the screen of your Samsung Note 8 (Android 9), while your Samsung A71 (Android 13) works perfectly. I see that although the Google Home app allows you to control the volume and initiate the cast, the TV screen goes black and the audio becomes distorted or "noisy" during mirroring. I appreciate the detailed technical information you provided regarding your firmware versions and device models; I’m happy to assist you with this.

To gather more information, I have a few questions:

  • Could you please let me know the specific model of your Chromecast? Here’s a helpful article about how to identify your Chromecast.
  • Does this issue occur when casting from specific "cast-enabled" apps (like YouTube or Netflix) on your Note 8, or is it strictly happening during full "screen mirroring"?
  • Are both phones and the Chromecast connected to the exact same Wi-Fi band (e.g., 5GHz vs. 2.4GHz)?
  • Have you recently updated the Google Home app on your Samsung Note 8?

In the meantime, please try these troubleshooting steps to see if the issue persists:

  • Check Permissions: Confirm that the Google Home app has permission to use your phone's location.
  • Clear Cache: Clear the cache for the Google Home app by navigating to Settings > Apps > Google Home/Play Services > Storage > Clear Cache.
  • Reinstall App: Uninstall and then reinstall the Google Home app from the Google Play Store.
  • Power Cycle: Perform a reboot on your Samsung Note 8.

I’ll be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Ashley
