Chromecast keeps disconnecting

Used to be amazing prior to Android 16 update. After this latest Android Update, Chromecast keeps disconnecting.

Despite resetting the Chromecast to factory, uninstalling the Google Home App and reinstalling, and trying all the recommended fixes (i.e. unplugging the modem, wireless router, re plugging these, factory resetting Chromecast etc).

THE ONLY SOLUTION WAS TO USE GOOGLE'S DNS on the Android streaming device (settings>more connections>private DNS> and then adding this: "dns.google",press save). If you use the Automatic DNS of your ISP or any other DNS (ControlD, Quad 9, Cloudflare, Next DNS or AdGuard), Chromecast will disconnect approximately every 5 min. It took me like 3 hrs to solve the problem!

All works but now I get ads in apps and cant use AdGuard or other DNSs. This is why Google is a monopoly and should be sued!!

Google is becoming like Microsoft. Every update causes problems and one has to painstakingly figure out solutions like an engineer!

Get with it Google, we want simplicity and consistency!! Otherwise, users will move to Apple! The left and must know what the right hand does!

Hi SMaw,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.

I understand that after the Android 16 update, your Chromecast with Google TV (HD) constantly disconnects from your Wi-Fi network when you use your ISP's default DNS or any third-party provider (such as ControlD or Quad9). You found that using Google's DNS was the only solution to maintain a connection, but this prevents you from using your preferred ad-blocking DNS. I truly appreciate you sharing the important details of your extensive troubleshooting efforts and the significant time you invested in finding a solution yourself. I'm glad to help you with this concern.

Based on this information, I recommend the following steps to restore the connectivity between your Chromecast and your Wi-Fi network:

  • Update your Smartphone's OS: Check that the operating system of the smartphone you use to manage your Chromecast is fully updated.
  • Update the Google Home App: Verify that you are using the latest version of the Google Home app. You can find more information on how to update the app in this Google Help Center article: how to update the Google Home app.
  • Update Chromecast Apps: Make sure all apps used on your Chromecast are updated.
  • Share Firmware Version: Please share the firmware version shown in the Google Home app:
    • Open the Google Home app.
    • Select the Chromecast with Google TV (HD).
    • Go to 'Settings.'
    • Note the Cast firmware version.
  • Keep Android’s Private DNS Off or dns.google, and move your custom DNS to the router. That way, Chromecast communication remains local and uninterrupted.
  • Contact Your Internet Service Provider (ISP): Contact your ISP to verify that your network settings are properly configured to support Google Cast communication. Specifically, the ISP should check the following:
    1. Multicast and UPnP are enabled.
    2. Client or AP isolation is disabled.
    3. The router's DNS configuration is not forcing DNS redirection that could interfere with Android's Private DNS or encrypted DNS providers.
    4. Ensure that no security or parental control filters are blocking local network traffic, as this can disrupt Chromecast connectivity.

Please keep me posted on your progress.

Best regards,

Virna
