Chromecast wifi Disconnected constantly

Sambutcher1981

Hi

I have 2 Chromecast with Google TV 4k devices.  I also have a Google Nest Wifi.

Recently, the Chromecast devices are loosing connection to the wifi network. They are the only devices in the network doing this.

The devices say wifi connection lost, even though the wifi strength is very strong. If a disable the wifi and reenable them it reconnects and for about 30 mins it is stays connected and then drops again.

It has only started doing this in the last week. If have done the following so far

  • Reboot your Wi-Fi router.
  • Reboot your Chromecast
  • Factory reset the Chromecast
  • Checked for interference full bar coverage

Any help 🙏

Sam

Hi @Sambutcher1981,

Thanks for posting here in the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Chromecast with Google TV 4K keeps disconnecting from the WiFi network. I'd be happy to help!

I appreciate all the efforts you've made trying to resolve this situation. To gather more information, I'd like to ask a few questions:

  • How many devices are connected to the router?
  • How far away is your Chromecast from the WiFi router?
  • Were there any recent changes to the network?
  • What type of device are you using (Android or iOS)?
  • Has the Chromecast been connected to this network before, or is this the first time setting the device up?

For now, I'd suggest the following:

  • Make sure you have the latest versions of the Google Home app and your phone software.
  • Chromecast with Google TV is compatible with both 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n networks and 5 GHz networks. However, it's recommended to connect to 5 GHz networks for better performance.
  • Perform a Test mesh connection. This test checks the connection between your router or primary WiFi point (the one connected to your modem). You can refer to the following article for instructions: Test mesh connection.

Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hello Jenniffer,

I can confirm:

  • The google Home App is on the latest version
  • I am using Google Nest Wifi network. It has both 2.4 and 5Ghz networks, but you can't select them on nest wifi, it just connects to the most appropriate network. I have checked the chromecast and it is on the 5Ghz connection though
  • Mesh tests are fine.

What i have noticed though is other devices are also impacted (network issues) so i don't believe it is a chromecast issue rather a Google Nest Wifi issue. I have done a factory reset on the Google Nest Wifi several times and although this fixes the issue, it does reappear after a few days to a week. A power reset of the whole Google Wifi nest network fixes the issue at the time, but is does reappear again after a few days to a week.

Thoughts on how to fix this? I have read other people having issues with their Google Nest Wifi as well, but not sure if there are any other fixes? I want to stay with Google, but if this can't be fixed, i will have to change to a new Mesh Wifi network.

Hi @Sambutcher1981,

Thanks for following up, and I apologize for the delay in response. I appreciate all the details you've provided. Let's try to fix this!

To continue gathering more information, I'd like to ask the following:

  • When did you first notice this inconvenience?
  • Do you use a modem and router combo?
  • How far away is the Chromecast from the point or router?
  • Do you have Google Nest Wifi points, and if so, how many?
  • Which other devices are not able to connect to Google Nest WiFi?
  • Were there any recent changes to the network or to your Google Nest WiFi? If so, did your device recently update?

In addition, I recommend you follow the next steps:

  • Check with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to see if your modem is in Bridge Mode. You can get more information in the next article: Bridge mode.
  • Make sure the number of devices connected does not exceed 254.
  • Try changing the DNS through the Google Home app:
    • Open the Home app.
    • Tap Favorites.
    • Tap Wifi > Network Settings > Advanced Networking.
    • Tap DNS.
    • Select Custom, then enter "8.8.8.8" and "8.8.4.4".
    • Tap Save twice to confirm the changes.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Modem is in bridge mode, device count is at 35, DNS is set the the settings listed.

In terms of when it started about a month ago, i have the main router and 3 other nest nodes, the Chromecasts are about 3m from the nodes and have excellent signal strength.

On changes to the Google nest wifi, it auto updates and I have no idea of when it updates. Current software version is 14150.882.9, HD Version H2D

Hi @Sambutcher1981,

Thanks for the details, and I appreciate your efforts.

About the updates, Google Nest WiFi updates automatically. In addition, I recommend these steps to check your network:

  • Run a mesh test to check the connection between your points. If the mesh test shows a "weak" connection, try moving the WiFi point closer to the router. You can find instructions in the following article: Mesh test guide: Improve your network performance.
  • Try changing the password on your Google Nest WiFi. This can refresh the connection. You can find instructions on changing your password here: Change Wi-Fi password.

Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

I have run mesh tests and all points come back as great or good.

On the password, this shouldn't matter. The problem reoccurs after a factory reset which changes the password. I have over 35 devices and constantly changing the password is not feasible.

I feel like this is an issue with with the hardware and the software version of the nest wifi components. The fact the issue reoccurs after both reboots and factory resets points to this.
