Chromecast with TV without CEC works unstable

LuMatic

Hello

I have a Chromecast connected to Denon Receiver Input, and old Samsung TV connected to  Denon output by HDMI.

My TV supports CEC/Anynet only partially to turn on connected device.

I don't know how, but after Chromecast factory reset and setting Chromecast by automated configuration wizard it all works perfectly. I can use one remote (Chromecast remote) to power on/off all my devices (TV, Denon, Chromecast) and volume control works on Denon. Lucky me.

But always, after some time, it stops to work... and it's impossible to set it up manually in the same way with remote and CEC settings. I tried all options and combinations, so apparently only automated configuration wizard available after fresh Chromecast start can set proper settings. I walk that way many times.

Any ideas how to fix that issue without factory reset?

I know it's a well known issue, with many feature/fix requests from other customers. Can you please consider fixing it?

You can find well described feature request here from @heybaybee: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Chromecast/Feature-Request-make-Chromecast-power-on-off-multi... (unfortunately replying is disabled so I had to create this new topic)

This also just started happening to me this week. No settings were changed. Both Power On/Off and changing the input buttons stopped working with my Samsung TV and CEC.

Is a factory reset the only option to resolve this issue?

Hi @bcrosby , I have removed both devices from remote settings and added them again but without setting buttons, so I left it on default auto CEC for all buttons, and it seems to work better.

I've only set TV IR for on/off (my TV doesn't fully work with CEC) and now again my Denon receiver turn on (but doesn't turn off) when I click power button and in the same time TV IR turn TV on/off.

I guess it's because my TV only support turning on by CEC and it's TV triggering receiver, not Chromecast.

So you can try removing and adding devices in remote settings before factory reset.

Ahh yeah I tried what you suggested. I removed the Samsung TV device, then re-added it.

CEC control still doesn't work from the Chromecast. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for the suggestion.

Ahh, sorry to hear that...

Pls, @Jeran , could you help us with this or direct our CEC questions and problems to people developing Google Chromecast?

Imho it's crucial feature to have Chromecast work with other devices, especially the older ones (new TVs don't need Chromecast at all, most users are good with build in software, as long as they can use Netflix and YouTube ;)). so Chromecast need to work great with older devices.

Or maybe Chromecast is an abandoned project and nobody is going to update software to better support old devices? (Like without CEC or with partial CEC support)

Sending 2 signals (CEC and IR) simultaneously (or one after another) seams like quite easy programming task, no new feature needed, only some change in UI to set it, and simple code to run 2 already existing methods instead of only one of them + QA. But I don't see the code, so maybe it's not so easy 😜

Hey there LuMatic,

HDMI-CEC can be a bit finicky when using an older TV set, so I'd be happy to help out where I can. The first thing I would check is if your TV has any power-saving options that may affect the HDMI-CEC settings. Then, if you are able to, check if the HDMI-ARC port on the TV is HDMI-ARC or HDMI-eARC. Finally, if you would like to try it, you can always set the remote to use IR instead of HDMI-CEC to see if that works better.

I hope that helps, and let me know if you have more questions.

Best regards,

Jeran
