There is no security $ restrictions options on the menu. How do you enable install from unknown sources for my device

You should be able to find that option in Settings>Privacy.

Our other Community Expert @Cathal_S suggested that you may need to turn on developer mode first.

Settings/About and then click on (Android TV OS build) seven times.

Sorry, I asked which CC you had but you already posted it is the new HD model.

I am going to research the new Chromecast and the option to add the unknown devices. It may be a limitation for that model.

I used to have this option on my chromecast and it's now disappeared. Same issue as what everyone is saying above. I also bought a Chromecast HD and same issue on the new one too. Is there any solution to this?

Have you tried to install anything yet? If you've got dev mode enabled you may be prompted somewhere else in the process to allow.

I have tried all the tricks, downloaded something to install no prompt comes up it fails

Just a quick update. I raised this as an escalation to our Community Specialists from Nest. There should be no changes in the settings of the new Chromecast (HD). They suggest to reboot the device and try to plug it in on a different HDMI port on the TV. If the issue persists, please factory reset the device.

Please let us know how this goes so I can forward your results over to them again.

Jumping in. I have the same problem. I performed a factory reset and the "unknown apps" option appeared in Privacy section but has disappeared minutes later, after installing other apps (SEND FILES TO TV and FILE MANAGER) from the PlayStore.

I have the 4K and HD version and I have managed to sideload on the 4K version. Just looking to replicate on the HD version.

Concur, just happened to me after factory reset. No longer have that option. Odd. Poor.

I tried both Factory Reset, and also changed HDMI port. It made no difference. 

Chromecast HD in Developer Mode, Settings->Security does not reveal the Unknown Apps option, so apps cannot be sideloaded.

Looking at this thread, it's clear that more than one (Chromecast HD) device is affected, and the ability to sideload with Chromecast HD was not regression tested. I'm therefore returning the device.

I bought it to replace my Chromecast 4k which failed after a year, and I didn't really need 4k.

Based on this experience, I think I'll look at other vendors to replace the defective 4k.

Trying to sideload .apk file with FileCommander.  Developer Options IS enabled. I go to Apps->Security, but "Install from Unknown Sources" is missing. It's not grayed out - it's missing - so I can't enable it. There are only 2 opts there, related to scanning of apps.

If I open the .apk in FileCommander, then the file contents of the .apk archive are displayed.  There is no Install option.

I am following instructions which, I suspect, are for Chromecast 4k. Has the method changed with Chromecast HD?

Yes, having the same issue once factory reset, you can find security and restrictions and unknown sources as soon as you install an app those settings disappear

Happy to hear it worked for you. I just returned mine and got a fire stick. For me it was the SMART move to a fire TUBE. NEXT time maybe Google will get SMART and youTUBE will NEXT step up their game

yes on any firetv device one can easily sideload...downloader by aftv has been my goto for yrs buuut firetv devices have amazon junk that gets annoying so i tried the xiaomi stick...the latest make sure it has the 2gb ddr4 and 905y4 running 11...there is also a mecool stick with the above specs and both are about 50-60$ on amazon...also if you prefer insteak of sticks actual boxes with ethernet and ports make sure they have the above...anyways ive a drawyer full of firesticks including the max as well as the beefed up cube...granted the max and cube are great but all the amazon coding id rather not have so im here trying the chromecast for my mom as she has youtube tv and is stubborn about not using my goto iptv apollo which is 20$ a month rather than 60$ and its vod section coupled with syncler + keeps me happy...point being i tried sidelading apollotv via downloader and yeh after becoming a developer still no unknown sources...i smell purposeful coding such as what roku does...that way folks have to opt for buying google content ie youtube tv and movies etc...these so called experts that pretend to help are fully aware google has not somehow made a mistake...that is what im not liking one bit the pretend to help watching you jump through hoops that end with thanks for your input out techs will get right to it...i have spoken...heh

actually i need to fix my reply...so in fact i was able to load apollo group iptv using the startup show app which is in google play store...syncler too...it was trying to sideload youtube next aka no ads using downloader where i hit the coding wall of death...my advice forget all the movie apks like cinema hd beetv etc etc or kodi builds etc just couple a solid iptv service with syncler pay the few extra bucks for real debrid and syncler plus and i can watch any ppv live or pretty much within 24 hrs the team at apollo group puts any sport event in their sports vod section...so my devices stay lean and fast...oh one thing that puts the chromecast above others is how you can uninstall anything...my mom gets netflix hbo max apple tv plus and more with her tmobile account but i uninstall them all since i can watch everything they offer within syncler plus and apollo iptv...i dont work for apollo btw its just my two cents having tried so many...but firesticks cant uninstall amazon prime among other annoying stuff like freevee etc...so yeh this chromecast is awesome if you keep it simple stupid...as far as youtube next apk mod it sounds like a factory reset allows for one sideload choice?....heh...make it count i guess but that will be mine cause im not doing the premium trial dance no more...i have spoken...again...heh

Having the same issue.  I notice this thread is marked as solved but it definitely isn't solved.   After doing a factory reset, Privacy and Security is there and i can choose unknown sources.  As soon as I install an app, the menu changes and I just see privacy and unknown sources is gone.
