I just bought Google TV Streamer 4K. I have a Sony TV and I used Youtube TV and other apps on Sony without problems. So I'm pretty sure it is not WiFi or bandwidth issue. However the Google TV streamer keeps on buffering to the extent that it is unusable. I closed background apps, checked for updates, checked WiFi signal in settings (4/5). Trying to see if there is anything I can do to fix before returning this clunker.

Hi MDFMT! I know this is a pain, but we need to isolate what's possibly causing this buffering when watching videos.
To start, it's good to remember that the Chromecast TV streamer supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands with the 802.11ac standard. This means it can connect to either band of your wireless network. Generally, the 5 GHz band offers higher speeds and is less susceptible to interference, making it ideal for streaming.
If it's connected to the 5GHz band and loses connection, it will try to connect to the available 2.4GHz band, which may be an option.
To help troubleshoot, please keep these points in mind:
For the most reliable high-definition video streaming, a wired LAN connection is generally recommended as it often provides a more stable and prioritized connection.
Let me know if this helps...💫

I just got the Streamer device a couple of weeks ago and have the same buffering problem, particularly on YoutubeTV. This wasn't happening on the Google Chromecast I had that's in the same location - so highly doubt it's the wifi / speed. Sometimes it will play for a while, but others it will buffer every few minutes. Super annoying.
