Can't Cast to Google TV Streamer

The older generation Chromecast isn't the only ones with casting issues. I'm having the same problem with my Google TV Streamer. There aren't any updates, and I've restarted all devices. I can cast to a Chromecast with Google TV and Nest displays just fine.

I also have the same problem with my Google Streamer.

I've done a factory reset and that didn't help.

I also reset them and the problem was not solved.

Hi folks!

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing casting issues with your Google TV Streamer. I appreciate your efforts in taking those steps before. I'm happy to help you!

To help me find the best solution, I'll need to ask you a few questions:

  • What specific device are you trying to cast from (e.g., Android, iPhone)? Please provide the make and model.
  • What operating system (OS) does it use?
  • Have you tried casting from another device? If so, are you getting the same error message?
  • Are you experiencing this issue with all apps, or only specific ones?
  • Are you using a VPN? If so, does the problem also happen when you disable the VPN?
  • Have you tried restarting your router/modem?
  • Do you have a dual-band router?
  • What firmware version is running on your Google TV Streamer? Here's an article where you can find instructions on how to check it: Chromecast and Google TV Streamer firmware versions.

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi

The main device I'm trying to use is a Google Pixel 8 Pro. The only error message I get is when trying to cast from the YouTube TV app, and I provided a screenshot above in the original post, otherwise just nothing happens.

My phone is on Android 15 with no updates showing.

I've tried casting from my Chromebook, but the Google TV Streamer doesn't even show up as an option to cast to.

I can't cast from any apps from any device to the Google TV Streamer. Both devices, my phone and Chromebook can cast to my Chromecast with Google TV and multiple Nest displays just fine.

I have a VPN, but turning it off doesn't help.

I've restarted my modem and routers, and that didn't help.

I'm using Google WiFi with dual-band, but I can't choose what band to use. It's done automatically.

The firmware version of the Google TV Streamer isn't available. I opened the Google TV Streamer tile in my Home app on my phone, clicked on settings and then device information, but clicking on Technical Information doesn't do anything. At the top it says, "Some settings are available only when your mobile device and this Google TV Streamer are connected to the same WiFi network." I only have one network, so It's obviously connected to the same network. That my explain the screenshot provide above.

Hi @emmzone22!

Thank you for the information provided. To try to isolate the problem, let's perform some troubleshooting steps.

  1. Perform a factory reset on your Google TV Streamer. Here is an article that will help you do it: How to factory reset your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer.
  2. While setting it up, don't use the Google Home app. Set up your device using only the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. You'll get a message saying 'Set up on TV instead.'
  3. Try casting again.

Let us know if the issue has been resolved. If the issue persists, I'd like some additional details:

  • Is your Google TV Streamer listed under the name of one of the rooms you created in the Google Home app or under "Local Devices"?
  • Do you receive the message, 'Some settings are available only when your mobile device and this Google TV Streamer are connected to the same WiFi network,' when the VPN is disabled, or in both cases?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi

I've done a factory reset twice. The first time was without the app, and I still had the problem. Not only that, but I couldn't add the Streamer to the Home app afterwards either. I did a factory reset again using the Home app, and once again, it still doesn't work. The Streamer shows up in the app but I can't control it from the app.

The Streamer is and shows in LIving Room.

I only receive the "same WiFi network" message in the Home app. Everywhere else I see nothing. Just nothing happens, and that's with or without the VPN enabled.

Once again, I'm not the only person with this problem. Someone in this post has it too, and there are other posts also. It's not limited to just the Chromecast 2nd Gen.

I'm not doing anymore factory resets either. It's an all day process, between configuring the device, redownloading every app, having to sign into every app, and setting it up with my home theater. It's too time consuming, especially when it doesn't fix the problem. My problem started when the older Chromecasts users started experiencing theirs.

I have the same problem and I have also reset to factory settings and it still fails.

Hi @CesarTobias!

Thank you for the information provided. I would like to get some additional data:

  • Could you provide me with the build number of your Google TV Streamer? This information is available on your Google TV Streamer if you open Settings > System > About > Android TV OS Build.
  • Is the Google Home app up to date?
  • Do you get any error messages when trying to cast? If so, what is the error message?
  • When you try to stream from any app, does your Google TV Streamer appear as an option to stream?

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi

Hi @emmzone22!

Thanks for the update. I'd like some additional data from your Google TV Streamer.

  • Could you provide me with the build number of your Google TV Streamer? This information is available on your Google TV Streamer if you open Settings > System > About > Android TV OS Build.
  • I'd like to know if you can try clearing data and cache from the YouTube TV app and then try casting again to verify if you're still getting the same error message.

Please keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Best regards,
Geremi

Android TV OS build: UTTK.241210.003

Yes, I still get that error after clearing YouTube TV app cache and data.

I have this same problem with new Google TV Streamer. Have done multiple factory resets. Hoping there is a fix soon. (Especially since the older Chromecast with Google TV is no longer available)

Curious, when you say new, do you mean it never has worked, or it worked initially and then quit? I ask because I have replacement being sent as I type this.

JAIT

It never worked. I have multiple Chromecasts (From 3 gen to Chromecast 4k) all work fine. Only the new ($99) Google Streamer has the cast issue, and i have never been able to correct it.

Ugh, it sounds like I'll be sending the replacement back. I too have a Chromecast with Google TV that works fine. Tech support is terrible.

I just received my replacement, and it's a new one. The best part is it works! I'm not holding my breath though on how long it lasts. Hopefully an update isn't pushed that disables it again.

Interesting...Maybe I should see about getting a replacement. How long did that take? (and how much useless troubleshooting did you need to go through?)

The replacement arrived in 2 days. I did the advanced exchange where they put a hold on my card and the sent out a new one. I then mail back the original one. I was going to send the replacement back if it didn't work. 8 first reported this issue in mid-March and that included one phone call and a few emails with tech support.

Any update?

Today my Google Streamer was updated to version UTTK.250305.003 but the problem persists, it keeps showing YouTube as an insecure device.

Is there anyone from Google here?? If so, your support is terrible. I was sent a replacement device which is probably refurbished. The replacement device is worse than the original. The original only had casting issues. With the replacement, the remote is unresponsive most of the time making it unusable. I tried a second remote and it's the same way. I can take both remotes and use them just fine on another device. It's not a remote issue. It's a device issue. I also did a factory reset 3 times with no fix. The RMA is for my original device which I want to keep now because it's at least usable. I want to send the replacement back because it's not usable, but they won't let me send in the replacement device. I'm not sending in a working device and keeping a non-working device. I have a $100 hold on the RMA so if the serial numbers don't match, I'll be charged the $100. Is there only one person working on this and is he/she only part time? It's been 2 months and nothing is resolved. I did see where Google put out a notice that casting to Vizio quit working, but what about all the other devices that quit casting too?
