Google TV Streamer not being recognized as Thread Border Router for matter devices

I’m trying to use my Google TV Streamer to setup new matter enabled light bulbs, but the Google home app says I do not have any thread border router. I have the TV Streamer which is advertised as one, I have Thread network enabled in its settings, and I have made sure the WiFi settings are correct.

is this a known issue?

Hi @Dhairya,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you're having issues setting up your Matter-enabled light bulbs because your Google TV Streamer is not being recognized as a Thread Border Router in the Google Home app. I'm happy to assist you.

To better understand the issue, please provide the information requested below:

  • What are the make and model of your light bulbs?
  • What’s the make and model of your mobile device (e.g., iPhone 15, Samsung S24, Google Pixel 8)?
  • What Wi-Fi router do you have (for example: Google Wifi, Nest Wifi, Eero, Netgear, or TP-Link)?
  • Is this your first time setting up a Matter device?
  • What is the specific error message that you're getting from the app?
  • Is the Matter device paired with its native app? If so, what is the current software version it's running?
  • Does the Google Home app indicate that an update is needed in the App Store or the Play Store?
  • Do you have other border routers in the same Matter ecosystem?
    • If yes, is Google TV Streamer (4K) your primary Thread border router?
  • Do you have any other Matter devices on your Thread network?

In the meantime, I recommend you check the information below:

  1. Check if your Matter-enabled light bulbs are turned on.
  2. Check if your Google TV Streamer (4K) is set up properly.
  3. Verify if your Google TV Streamer (4K) is connected to the Thread network and if it's Thread-enabled.
  4. Check if other Matter-enabled devices are available and if they can connect.

Keep me posted. I'll be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Anders
