Google TV remote controls volume and input on soundbar but not power

I saw someone posted about this a year ago and I have the exact same problem - I have a Sony soundbar that cannot be controlled with CEC because it is connected via optical and has no HDMI input. I'm able to program the Google remote to change the volume and inputs, but for some reason I can't turn the dang thing on and off. How does Google have the codes for everything else this soundbar does but not turning it on and off???  I assume there's just no solution, which sucks, it would be cool if I could at least manually plug in the code or something. Never had an issue with any other universal remote and my Xbox One that just died turned it on and off no problem along with the TV.

Hi golgiapparatus,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. Since it is not communicating via HDMI-CEC, it is most likely limited to Infrared communication. But even if it uses HDMI-CEC, it doesn’t guarantee it will work on all devices. You may have noticed that the remote may control one or two functions (volume, power, or input) but not all, which means that is as far as the control on the particular device/brand/model the Chromecast Voice remote can go. The remote is intended to control the Chromecast device. The controls for power, volume, and input for other devices (TV, AVR, soundbar, etc.) are just an added feature. It grants convenience for the users by not using multiple remotes, but that doesn’t mean it has hardware similar to universal remotes. I hope this gives clarity to what the Chromecast Voice Remote can do.

Thanks,

Kimy
