Newby to Chromecast with a question

Hi

Sorry I have had to select Web Browser even though this is a question about TV.  I do not have an issue using this on my laptop or iPhone, the Virgin Plus app works fine.

I have never used Chromecast and I'm not sure if it does what I need.  I have used Roku in the past when I have needed to download apps for my tv (MLB / DAZN/ Netflix) etc etc

Do I have to do the same with my Chromecast?  The box mentions 1000's of Apps available but how do I put them on my TV?

I do not have a Google TV nor any Android device.  I have downloaded the Google Home app for IOS and am currently using that.

I am in Canada and have Virgin Plus TV.  In order to watch a channel on my tv I have to go into either my phone or iPad, open the Virgin Plus app, select the channel I want to watch then cast to my tv.  An absolute pain in the ass to do.  Have I missed something, can I not download apps onto the Chromecast so I watch using only my TV ?  Would I need a special remote for that?

Thanks

If you have a Chromecast 3rd gen (the round device that does NOT come with a remote) you can't download apps to it or your TV.

You use the apps on your phone or tablet or certain webpages on your computer to tell your Chromecast device what to play on your TV.

The new Chromecast with Google TV (the oblong device that comes with a remote) DOES allow you to download apps into it.  But, not all apps work yet with it and the internal memory is rather small so you can't download too many apps before you run out of space.

It did.  When I buy my new TV I'll get the built in version, much easier.
