No Multichannel sound setting on Chromecast

Hi, I cannot set my Chromecast to surround sound. I found this  https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/7575098 in the helpfile but my phone only allows me to create a group or to change a groupdelay in the audio settings. What am I doing wrong?

Hi janarkesteijn,

The help center page you linked to is for older generation Chromecast devices. You indicated that you have the Chromecast with Google TV device?

If so then using the device remote navigate to the settings icon (⚙️ top right) / Display and sound / Advanced sound settings.

I found that. It is set to surround but no audio is played. Only when I set it to stereo only, sound is reproduced. But I want it to play multichannel audio

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help here, Cathal_S.

janarkesteijn, thanks for reaching out. Chromecast outputs surround sound if a particular app supports it, and if the Audio/Video Receiver (AVR) or TV it's plugged into tells the Chromecast over Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) that it supports 5.1, AC3*, and AC3/EAC3* surround sound. If the TV or AVR do not support one of these settings, Chromecast will not output surround sound.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Juni

I have a Denon AVR-S660H which supports Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Surround, DTS-HD. My Bluray player and my tv-provider are properly multi-channel decoded, but not my Chromecast. I tried to connect the Chromecast to alternative HDMI inputs but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Thank you for helping out on this thread, Cathal and Juni!

Hey there janarkesteijn,

I'm just checking up on this thread, were you still having issues with surround sound? If so, what does your set-up look like? I know some folks have success connecting the Chromecast directly to the AVR's HDMI port, and then connecting the AVR via HDMI to the TV's HDMI-ARC.

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran, I have connected it like that. I connected my Chromecast to my AVR (Denon 660), and my AVR to my TV HDMI-ARC. I found a work-around, though. If this occurs disconnecting and taking the power of the Chromecast for a minute and then reconnecting it sometimes works. It's not a solid solution...
