Powering on a non CEC TV and a CEC receiver with a single cc remote button

Re: Feature Request: make Chromecast power on / off multiple devices

A few years ago, I expressed my frustration about not being able to simultaneously power on a non-CEC TV and a CEC receiver using only a Google Chromecast remote. I had mentioned finding a workaround but never posted it because I accidentally broke it before understanding how it worked. Then, somewhat randomly, it started working again.

That was until recently, when I decided to experiment with the settings on my TV, receiver, and Chromecast, which, of course, broke the setup again! However, I've now rediscovered the solution and want to share it for anyone encountering similar issues in the future. I can't guarantee it will work with your setup, but it may be worth a try.

How it works:

Here's how my current setup operates: when I press the power button on my Google Chromecast remote, both the TV and receiver turn on simultaneously. Pressing the button again immediately turns off the TV, while the receiver powers down automatically after 15 minutes.

My setup:

  • Google Chromecast HD: This is connected to the HDMI IN (STRM BOX) on the receiver and powered via a USB cable from the receiver's USB OUT (5V/1A).
  • Onkyo HT-R494 receiver: This is a CEC-enabled receiver.
  • Samsung TV (2015 model): This TV is non-CEC and doesn't have any CEC-related options in its settings. It's connected to the HDMI OUT of the receiver.

Google Chromecast Settings

  • Display & Sound:
    • HDMI-CEC: ON
  • System:
    • Sleep timer: 15 minutes

Before adjusting the next few settings, you might need to set up the buttons for your receiver and TV. I've only configured the volume button for my receiver (1) and the power button for my TV (2).

  • Remote & accessories:
    • Onkyo Receiver (1)
    • Samsung TV (2)
    • Volume button: Onkyo (IR)
    • On/off button: Samsung TV (IR) (This is the only way I can power my TV on/off with the Chromecast remote.)
    • Input button: Auto (CEC) (I'm only using one input on both my TV and receiver, and I don't want this button to do anything, which it doesn't. Your situation might be different.)
    • Set remote buttons:

Onkyo HT-R494 Settings

Here are the settings for my Onkyo HT-R494 receiver. I'm not entirely sure if all of these are strictly necessary, but this is my current configuration:

  • HDMI Settings (Setup button > 5. Hardware > 2. HDMI):
    • HDMI CEC (RIHD): On
    • HDMI Standby Through: Auto (This is not the same as Auto(Eco))
    • Audio Return Channel: Off
    • Auto Lip Sync: On
  • Power Management Settings (Setup button > 5. Hardware > 3. Power Management):
    • Sleep Timer: Off
    • Auto Standby: On
    • Auto Standby in HDMI Standby Through: On
    • Power Out at Standby for STRM BOX: On

Final remark

It's possible that the receiver needs to enter its automatic sleep mode (after 15 minutes of inactivity) for the simultaneous power-on function to work correctly. Manually switching everything off and then attempting to power it all on at the same time might not achieve the desired outcome.

I understand this setup might seem a bit convoluted, but hey, if it works and keeps your old TV going, that's what matters! I'm glad if it could help you somehow. Cheers!

I've noticed, with this setup, when I use the power button of the Chromecast remote, the first thing I can see on the tiny screen of the onkyo receiver is Volume, as if I was changing the volume despite it remaining the same.
