Problem with hidden SSID

RikGrim
Community Member

I have got 2 Chromecasts HD that work properly UNTIL I set the SSID of my network to HIDDEN.

From that point on they just refuse to connect and/or show up (their status in the app shows as off-line) in the Google Home app. Once the SSID is set to visible everything works fine again. Sadly I live in a environment where a non-visible network is preferred....

Is there a way to set up the Chromecasts so they connect to a hidden SSID..

Thanks in advance..

Hi RikGrim,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. Give the steps below a try and let me know how it goes:

  • Go to Google TV settings > Network and Internet > Choose your (saved) network and forget it, then > Add new network, and input the correct credentials.
  • If it fails, do a factory reset and re-setup by manually adding the network and its credentials.
  • Ensure that the distance is within 15 feet.
  • Ensure that there are no obstructions or anything that may cause interference.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi Kimy,

I tried this, but the problem stays the same. Everything works fine, until I switch to hidden SSID on my router. The chromecasts can no longer see the netwerk and can not be accessed.

Thanks

Hi there,

Thanks for the details. I just want to confirm if you tried the setup while the SSID was hidden. If you did, let’s do it this way instead:

  1. Set it up from scratch while the SSID is not hidden.
  2. On the "Connect to Wi-Fi" part, don’t choose your Wi-Fi.
  3. Instead, manually type in the credentials (SSID, password, security type, etc.).
  4. Once connected, hide the SSID and observe.

I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Kimy

Hello Kimy,

Allas, outcome is the same.

I have come to terms with accepting that these chromecasts cannot work with hidden SSIDs. If it happens on one device it coyld be a fluke or error, but since it happens on both devices...
