It didn't fail because of an update. It failed because an embedded security certificate was (stupidly) set to expire on March 9, 2025.

For those who did a factory reset there's a workaround. On your mobile, disable "automatic set date configuration" and set date 8/3/2024 (This was the last date that Chromecast was working) after that you will be able to configure and add your chromecast device on google home app and connect it to the wifi network (remember that your mobile and chromecast must be on the same wifi network 2.4 GHz)

Yes this happened with me as well I couldn't other rea authenticate my Chromecast I have reset it and now it's not working for me kindly help.
03-12-2025 05:56 AM
Quite laughable that you advise not to factory reset the day AFTER it went down. The trouble shooting guide tells to do exactly that!! So even when the issue is fixed we will need to await further instructions. Google clearly knew the certificate was going to expire and did nothing.

I can confirm that the workarounds posted on Reddit and elsewhere will indeed restore Gen2 casting from Android devices and Chrome browser (sorry, iPhone users). Had mine back up 'n running by Monday morning. Not perfect, but for those who are impatient (and tech-savvy enough), it's a viable option until Google issues a proper security certificate fix.

What app are you trying to cast from? Certain apps, like Spotify, won't work with this workaround because they do their own authentication.
Also, did you make sure to revert your phone's date/time setting to Auto?
03-12-2025 06:03 AM
Reestablecí los valores de fábrica del Chromecast, porque cuando salió la información sobre el problema ya lo había reseteado, van a avisar como solucionar este problema?
03-12-2025 06:07 AM
You should have included "do not restore your device" in the error message. How long do we need to wait for a fix?
03-12-2025 06:23 AM
Ok,
Abbiamo preso atto che siete a conoscenza del problema e che ci state lavorando, ma a noi interessa sapere quando lo risolverete e come verremo avvertiti che è stato risolto grazie
03-12-2025 06:25 AM
Just a shame that I already performed a factory reset to try and fix this issue prior to knowing that this was a global issue! I hope that you can resolve this mess. I have been buying google products for many years and own a lot of them. This is far from acceptable.
03-12-2025 06:30 AM
Will we get a notification ıf you fix this ıssue? Or will we get just a lot of spam emails?
ıs it possible to send us a website link to follow time to time and get the last result on what to do.
03-12-2025 06:31 AM
When can I expect the fix?
03-12-2025 06:35 AM
When will my Chromecast Audio work again so I can listen to music from my Plex server?
03-12-2025 06:38 AM
Where is the update from Google? Communication is key and Google has not communicated.
03-12-2025 06:49 AM
När kommer åtgärder???
03-12-2025 06:49 AM
Im having same problem. My chromecast will not work , keeps saying cannot authenticate. How much longer until problem will be fixed
03-12-2025 06:53 AM
I, and I imagine others like me, have already performed the restore, because I followed the guidelines you provided to resolve the problem. You should have removed that entry from the possible solutions. In this case, will it be possible to resolve the problem even after performing the restore?

The Chromecast devices including 2nd Gen and Chromecast Audio,
are far superior and more useful to the user of Google's ecosystem
than the newer Google TV systems, for the very simple reason that:
THEY JUST WORK and THEY ARE SIMPLE.
A couple of ideas that used to be Google's design principles.
And now, perfectly usable devices are crippled and made obsolete through firmware,
in order for Google to sell new devices or serve us annoying ads through Google TV...
1. How is this in any way sustainable or ecological policy?
2. Why brick a device that may be critical to larger set-ups
within the Google ecosystem, that serve users in ways that
Google TV devices cannot? Currently Google Hub 2nd Gen
plus Google Nest 2nd Gen, are essentially useless to users!
3. All user efforts lead to us not needing physical devices, so
I currently control 2nd Gen Chromecast by voice commands
to my Google Hub. Why would you force the hustle of using
Google Tv remote control to a user? (lost remote, batteries,
lost remotes etc) Just let me speak to the Google Assistant!
4. Why does Google TV not lower the system volume when
I am speaking to the Google Assistant, just like Chromecast
does? Why do I have to go through apps just to cast media?
You had a superior concept and device, but you are crippling
it for the sake of Google TV. Just allow Chromecasts to work
for the user, the way they were initially intended trouble free!
Stop messing up your ecosystem and alienating your users.
You are essentially doing Amazon's and Apple's "marketing"!

unfortunatelly there are nobody from google to learn your lessons.
And also, send message to your customers saying Sorry, is the minimum for a civilized world. But seems gogglevil is a barbarian entity
03-12-2025 07:01 AM
ahhh and this type of behavior exposes who Googlevil really is. I would not trust them to store my documents
03-12-2025 07:26 AM
They apologized
03-12-2025 07:01 AM
The SSL certificate just EXPIRED... take a deep breath and be patient, a fix is coming our way. Also, it pushed me to re-assess my needs and buying a Google TV Streamer was the best thing that could happen even though there're other cheaper solutions (Roku, FireStick) or more expensive ones. (Apple TV) I chose Google TV Streamer because of its android ecosystem and my daughter is now able to stream without the need for mommy or daddy's selecting anything on their phones when she wants something and can navigate easily in the interface without us even needing to assist her. Things evolve, needs change, etc.
03-12-2025 07:04 AM
R U kidding, they mess it up without any regret and you still buy from googlevil? LOL.
03-12-2025 07:26 AM
You are too emotional over a 50$ dongle .
03-12-2025 07:31 AM

It is just a solution that does not help me dear BadFlash,
I'm perfectly satisfied with my Chromecast 2nd devices.
I currently have 5 in operation plus another two 3rd Gen.
I install one on every TV in my house & my parents house.
03-12-2025 07:10 AM
we are not in a garage, if I am going to disturb 30million of families I have to advise them in advance or apologize after the issue, also compensate
03-12-2025 07:22 AM

03-12-2025 07:11 AM

03-12-2025 07:03 AM
