Recently purchased the new ChromeCast (the white version /Google TV) However, I am having problems with the sound! No sound when using Netflix, I do have sound with Netflix when I hover over the movies? but not when playing a movie ?? No sound at all with Prime! Playing YouTube is no problem. I have adjusted and changed all sound settings without success. It was 1x successful to get sound with Netflix after resetting the Netflix app, then the sound was gone again... ?? Anyone have any idea what's causing it and how to fix it?

You mentioned that the Chromecast device connected to a HDMI switch and the HDMI switch is connected to the amplifier via digital optical (Toslink).

The reason you not enjoying multichannel surround sound is due to the fact that movie streaming applications, like Netflix, Disney, Amidon and others, use Dolby Digital Plus format to deliver the multichannel soundtracks.

Chromecast with Google TV does not have a built-in Dolby Digital Plus decoder.

Chromecast with Google TV supports Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital surround passtrough only, which means that the TV or the AV receiver must have a built-in Dolby Digital decoder.

Furthermore, multichannel audio soundtracks encoded with Dolby Digital Plus cannot be delivered through digital optical or digital coaxial audio interfaces. Dolby Digital Plus can only be delivered through HDMI / HDMI ARC / HDMI eARC.

In order to deliver multichannel audio soundtracks through digital optical or digital coaxial, in your case, a Dolby Digital Plus decoder is required to extract the standard Dolby Digital core (5.1 channels at 640 Kbps) from the Dolby Digital Plus audio format.

The fact that you are are to enjoy multichannel surround sound using Apple TV is due to the fact that the device has a built-in Dolby Digital Plus decoder.

At the end, you have three options:

  • upgrade the TV to a model with a built-in Dolby Digital Plus decoder
  • upgrade the AV receiver to a model with a built-in Dolby Digital Plus decoder
  • upgrade both the TV and the AV receiver to models with built-in  Dolby Digital Plus decoder.

Good luck!

Something is wrong with the ChromeCast regarding the sound! (doesn't matter which version) My setup; ChromeCast to HDMI switch, the switch has its own Toslink output to the Denon amplifier, the HDMI goes to the beamer. No 5.1 sound possible with the ChromeCast, for example with Netflix, Prime Disney, etc. Why not ?? The same setup but with an AppleTV no problem... What is the difference in the sound support of AppleTV & ChromeCast? I have tested two versions of the ChromeCast and the same problem ! Why does the ChromeCast not support 5.1 surround sound in this way? I'm afraid ChromeCast out and new AppleTV in!
