Stereo audio balance

I'm about 75% deaf in one ear, and am trying to use headphones to watch shows without waking up the household. The problem is that I can't figure out how to adjust the stereo balance in the headphones. Is this even possible? It feels like it should be, but none of the settings seem to work. I'm using airpods, if that makes the slightest bit of difference.
