Throw away old chromecast?

Mike-Mass
Community Member

I have a couple of what I think are 1st Gen Chromecast sticks.  We have one I just installed in my smart Samsung tv. I get a message saying “Reconnect Me” and it informs me that the kitchen tv can’t find the network. The tv is actually on the network. We have a Nest camera set up in the nursery and would like to broadcast that to the tv. The chromecast is on HDMI 3 and I’m presented with a 4-digit code but I don’t know where to add it. So is the chromecast device a throwaway or can we still cast to it? On my iPhone there’s no cast icon when viewing the nest camera. Thanks in advance for the help.-Mike

Hi Mike-Mass,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry if you're having an issue with your Chromecast. Let's sort this out.

Has there been any changes on the router settings or network connection? Please try the steps listed below:

  1. Check if the Wi-Fi network is available and if other devices (phone, tablet, desktop, or laptop) are able to connect to it and access the internet.
  2. If you made any recent changes in your Wi-Fi router settings such as changing the SSID or password, please go to the Wi-Fi settings of the phone and connect directly to the Chromecast's temporary hotspot, Chromecast XXXX, or manually look for the previous name that has been used for the Chromecast device like Living Room TV or Bedroom TV, and then proceed with the normal setup.
  3. Make sure the Chromecast device is within 15 feet of the setup device and the Wi-Fi router.
  4. Reboot the Chromecast device.
  5. If the device is a Chromecast (1st gen), use the HDMI extender that came in the box with your Chromecast device. The extender may help reduce Wi-Fi signal interference.
  6. Use a mobile hotspot to set up Chromecast. This is to isolate the issue.
  7. Reboot your router.
  8. Factory reset your Chromecast.

Once it is set up, you can stream your Nest Camera to your Chromecast by using a voice command. Also, make sure they are connected on the same Wi-Fi network. See this support website article to learn more.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hey there,

It's me again. I want to make sure you're all good — how did the steps go?

Best,

Jennifer

Good Morning Jennifer…

Thank you for giving me a checklist to work against. Here’s some information that might help:

1. Network is fine, both my Ring and Nest Cameras are 100% working flawlessly.

2. WiFi is very good in my house, I have rest the modem and router but nothing has changed with regard to the Chromecast.

3. I believe this Chromecast is a 1st Generation device, it looks like this:

4. The Chromecast is powered on, and I have disconnected the power, waited 1 minute and reconnected. It is plugged into HDMI3 on my Samsung Smart TV. HDMI3 shows up in the Smart Bar menu at the bottom of the screen.

5. When I select HDMI3 on the menu and power cycle the Google Chromecast the “G” appears on the screen, and then I get these screens:
A. I do get a screensaver image like a sunset or whatever.
B. On my iPhone I get a screen that says “Chromecast Not Playing” that has a sort of rotary dial for volume, with two buttons below, one shows a google remote, the other says “Addto a room”.
C. The next screen on the tv is a blue background and says “Reconnect me” and there’s a 4-digit code in the lower right. It’s impossible to interact with though… nothing I do on the Samsung remote triggers anything on the screen. Seems like it’s frozen.

When I saw that last screen I was hopeful, but like I said… it’s frozen. I’d post pix of the screens but I’m not allowed to post pix.

6. When I saw the last screen I was hopeful, but its a dead screen, I can’t seem to interact with it with the TV remote at all. So if you can tell me what I’m doing wrong or whether the Chromecast device is screwed up, that would be helpful.

Looking forward to somehow getting this working so we can watch the nursery Google camera on the kitchen TV when we’re eating and the baby is sleeping.

Best Regards…

Did you read my reply? Please give me an item by item response to what I listed, that would be most helpful.

Hi there,

I'm sorry for the confusion. Based on the information that you've provided, it looks like you haven't tried to do the second and last steps as shown above. Please try to connect directly to the Chromecast's temporary hotspot, Chromecast XXXX, or manually look for the previous name that has been used for the Chromecast device like Living Room TV or Bedroom TV, and then proceed with the normal setup. If the issue persists, please do a reset on your Chromecast.

Thanks,

Jennifer
