Unable To Rename Chromecast

PCPC
Community Member

I'm unable to rename my Chromecast. Problem first reported to Google 3 months ago. They had no fix then and still no update.

All the answers on this issue seem to be out of date. There is no way to click "name" like suggested to rename the device. Clicking name is locked out.

I've tried everything including a hard factory reset, all I've managed to do is change it back to its default name, living room TV. And now that means I have two devices called living room TV 😞

I know you stopped making chromecasts because you want everyone to buy the more expensive and overpriced TV streamer but you still need to keep your other hardware up to date. Looks and feels like Google are not supporting older hardware, thus encourages waste, equals Google Green Washing!

Hi @PCPC,

Thanks for posting to the community. I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing a persistent and frustrating issue with renaming your Chromecast. I understand how inconvenient it is to have two devices with the same default name, especially after going through the effort of a factory reset. Let's work together for a solution.

To help me understand this specific naming behavior and find a solution for you, could you please provide a few more details?

  • What specific model of Chromecast do you have?
  • What type of mobile device are you using (e.g., iPhone model, Android phone brand and model), and what operating system version is it running?
  • What version of the Google Home app are you currently using? (You can usually find this by going to the Google Home app's settings, then "About," or by checking your phone's app information).

While you've tried a factory reset, sometimes app-specific data can prevent certain settings from updating. Let's try to address this:

  • Try to Force Close and Reopen the App: Fully close the Google Home app (swipe it away from recent apps) and then reopen it.
  • Clear the Google Home App's Cache/Data (or Reinstall):
  • For Android: Go to your phone's Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications) > Google Home > Storage & cache > Clear cache, then Clear storage (or Clear data). You will need to sign back in.
  • For iOS: The most effective way to clear the app's cache and data is to uninstall the Google Home app completely, restart your iPhone, and then reinstall the app from the App Store. You will need to sign back in.

After trying these steps, please try to rename your Chromecast again through the Google Home app.

Please let me know if these steps help or if the "Name" option remains locked out after performing them. Your answers to the questions will also help us pinpoint the problem and determine the next best steps.

Regards,

Kevin
