Unable to update Chromecast HD

Milan-s
Community Member

I get a popup message that there is a new update (STTL.231114.004).

However, whenever I try to update it, it downloads and runs the verification, but as soon as it starts installing, the process abruptly stops and I get an error message saying "Couldn't install system update" - Updates are temporarily unavailable. Try again later.

Please help. I can't even install any apps from the app store either.

Well your lucky mine had t managed any updates since April 2023 patch update it either just keeps searching never finds update or like yesterday found update again but never moves from verifying. Factory reset fails oh and the ever so unhelpful google and support team don’t care in fact two of the IT experts who I can only assume are retarted laugh and say can’t help and hang up. It’s only 13 months old they have not even tried to resolve issue since nov. Currently making social media know about their service and device I would t care but it really is a over hyped basic piece of rubbish no one in uk should buy one unless you want very little apps and no free google supplied tv stations unlike what they offer in America

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community, @Milan-s. Sorry for the trouble, but this is a possible network issue (DNS-related). Try this approach: using the remote, disconnect your Chromecast with Google TV from your home Wi-Fi and temporarily connect it to your smartphone’s mobile hotspot just until it completes the update. You may as well check if you can install an app while you’re at it. You can then disconnect from your mobile hotspot and reconnect to your home Wi-Fi. You may also do a full clean-up by performing a factory reset before doing this to remove any corrupted files or data. Let us know how it goes.

@nfuller, I have already responded to you in another thread.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hey Kimy.

I've done all of that even before posting on this thread. I just forgot to mention it. I did connect to a mobile hotspot, tried installing via mobile hotspot but I still get the same issue. I even did a factory reset and still it doesn't work. It seems that there is another issue...

In the settings the current software versions starts with "STTK" and this version starts with "STTL". Could this indicate anything? I don't know what else to do, but the device keeps becoming more unusable. It crashes randomly and freezes randomly where I need to unplug it from the wall....

My device is new, bought early Jan 2024.

Hi Milan-s,

Thanks for the reply. That STTK patch was for October, and the new Android TV OS build, STTL.231114.004, is supposed to be the latest. Something is up with your device. Kindly check the warranty here: Warranty Checker. Once you confirm that it’s still covered, I suggest you reach out to our support team for a replacement here: Contact Us. You may choose the option of a live chat or a callback from a live representative. We can also send you a form if you prefer communication via email.

We look forward to your response.

Hey Kimy,

The Chromecast was bought in the US, however I no longer reside there. So I can't really service the device even tho I've only had it for a month. It's really frustrating that a brand new device isn't working properly and has to be returned. From what I understand, I won't be able to update the device even in the future, which is quite unfortunate. I've been looking for solutions on other forums too, but I'm unable to get any information. From what I found online, there are many people having the same issue and, I think the best solution would be some way to force updating the device. As I said, I can't return the device so I guess it means that I'll be either stuck with a malfunctioning device or I should look for other brands that offer a more serious product that doesn't stop functioning a month after using it...

Milan

Hi folks,

Thanks for joining this thread, @dirkberlin. What steps have you tried so far? Kindly give us the full details of the steps that you’ve tried. We just want to avoid doing the steps again or assuming some steps have been done but weren't done correctly.

@Milan-s, I hear you. It is quite unfortunate that the turn of events led to this. You bought the Chromecast device in the US, and this happened when you’re already out of the country. The force update is done when you perform a factory reset, and you’ve done that already. The device will get all the patches directly from the server, which is what it will install. You may have read different threads related to stuck updates that will lead to replacements. That is, because their devices don't boot up and are stuck on a recovery screen, any actions only go on a loop. Your device, however, is still usable, but the update can’t seem to complete its installation. A replacement would be the best option, but the challenge here is that it would be shipped to the US. Try reaching out to the support team with the links I shared above. We, fellow users, also ask for help from them directly. Let me know if you have other questions for me.

Warmly,

Kimy
