You cannot set a time limit for YouTube Kids for Android TV

I have a Chromecast with a couple of Adult accounts and a Kids accounts. On the Kids account I have 'YouTube Kids for Android TV' setup. On the Kids Account I have a 1 hour time limit set (Settings -> Screen Time -> Daily Limit). If my child is watching YouTube Kids under that account, the time limit does not apply. When I check that child's usage under FamilyLink (Controls -> App Limits), I can see 'YouTube Kids' (which I'm guessing is the app used on computers and such) AND 'YouTube Kids for Android TV'. I can set a time limit on the 'YouTube Kids' app , but there is no option to do that on the 'YouTube Kids for Android TV' app. Why can you not set time limits for 'YouTube Kids for Android TV' in FamilyLink and why does the Kids Account Screen Time Daily Limit setting on the Chromecast not apply to the 'YouTube Kids for Android TV' app?

Hi @IMIRNMN

Thanks for posting in the community. I apologize for the inconvenience that your Chromecast may be causing.

I understand that you're having trouble setting up daily screen time on your Android TV. While you couldn't use that specific feature, you can still utilize the built-in parental controls to set a bedtime for your child's profile. Here's how:

  • Access Settings: From the TV home screen, go to the top right and select the user profile icon, then choose Settings.
  • Select Child's Profile: Go to Accounts and Sign In and choose the desired child's profile.
  • Set Bedtime: Select Screen time > Bedtime.
  • Choose Days and Times: Select the days you want to schedule a bedtime and set the start and end times.

If this doesn't meet your needs, you can also explore using the Family Link app:

  • Open Family Link: Open the Family Link app on your device.
  • Select Your Child: Choose the child's profile.
  • Set Daily Limit: Tap Controls at the bottom center, then select Daily limit and Set up.
  • Choose Time Limit: Select the desired hours and minutes for the daily screen time limit.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or need further assistance.

Thank you,

Catheryn.

Hi Catheryn,

Did you happen to read my post at all? I mentioned in it that I have App Limits set in the Family Link App, and Daily Limits set in the Chromecast. I also have a bedtime set on the Chromecast but that doesn't work either.

The specific issue is the "YouTube Kids for Android TV" (YTKfA) app; those limits do not apply to it. If they use YTKfA on the Chromecast, it allows them to watch it for as long as they want. If they use other apps, it will stop them from running after the limit is reached.

I have limits setup on their iPads; those limits track every app, including YouTube Kids, and shuts things down once the time limit is reached. The YTKfA app is handled differently than every other app my kids use. I want to know why and how to fix it. To me this sounds like a Google problem that your engineers need to look at and correct.

Hi @IMIRNMN

Thanks for your response and the additional information.

I'm truly sorry to hear that the issue is still happening, even after trying the steps we recommended.

Since we've exhausted all our available options, it seems the problem might be related to the YouTube app itself. I recommend reaching out to their support team for further assistance. They may have more specific information or troubleshooting steps that can help resolve the issue.

Use this link to check YouTube Help Center; you may find useful information and also the contact us form to get in touch with the right specialist.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Best regards,

Catheryn.
