strange chromecast behavior - can't connect properly, please help!

Hi guys,

I got a new chromecast excited to get up and running and I am having a lot of trouble getting it connected properly.

When I go through the setup procedure it lets me scan the QR code and select the wifi network, then when I enter the password it says 'connected' on the tv screen, and on my pixel 6 with the Home app it says connecting for a long time then always says the following:

Nothing I have tried got past this. I have read as many forums and help pages as I can find. Few things I have tried are:

  1. Both 2.4G and 5G networks on phone and chromecast
  2. checking AP isolation is off on my router
  3. checking upnp is on on my router
  4. Resetting router / factory reset chromecast / reset phone multiple times

My router is a tplink archer 55.

If I do not use the phone to set it up and do it through the chromecast remote, it connects to the wifi fine, but there is some weird behaviour. Sometimes the home app doesn't see the chromecast, sometimes it does.

Then if I try to cast the screen directly with the Home app, sometimes it works, other times it shows me this

The main reason I got the chromecast was to stream things with a VPN, so I installed nordVPN on the chromecast and phone, but if I try to cast from an app on the phone it doesnt work as soon as the VPN is active on the phone.

Anyone got any ideas?? I thought it would be simple but I'm going around in circles so far.

Cheers

Dan

Hey there Danstar10,

I apologize for the late response, and thank you for being patient! While you are able to install and use a VPN on the Chromecast device, if you enable a VPN on your phone, or whatever device you want to cast from, you aren't able to connect properly between the casting device and the Chromecast. If you would like to have a VPN active on both devices while casting, you may want to look into putting NordVPN on your router. Here is more information from NordVPN.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran
