Recently when I ask my Google Nest to turn off the lights, it says the lights are offline (they are not) and then when my husband asks the same thing it works fine.

I think you may be confusing the symptoms with the underlying condition. I have been having consistent problems with Google saying “devices offline” and it’s like an entire room of lights usually.

When I ask it a second time, it will work.

It’s not a different inflection or me raising my voice; the command is understood the first and second time.
So when you say it works for your husband, I’m guessing it might simply be the second time it’s given a command.
I have a feeling it’s something to do with the Google Assistant going into a type of network drop, then once you’ve asked it a second time it’s re-established the connection to the smart devices.

Most of the issues I have are with the smart lights.
I also have a mixture of 37 smart lights (most Hue but a few others tossed in), 5 cameras, 11 Sonos, 3 Hubs, and other assorted smart plugs.

Google Assistant seems to be having a few more issues than normal lately; I was hoping for firmware updates. Which is also something I’d recommend you do.
open the individual smart apps (HUE/Kasa/Govee etc) and check for firmware updates for all the smart devices.
sometimes the network changes (new WiFi/router devices have security patches and it breaks a connection to these smart devices).
There’s my 25 years of IT (NERD) suggestion.
mine still flakes but I’d suggest you test by repeating yourself instead of your husband next few times…
