I've been very underwhelmed by the Gemini integration with Google Home. How do I remove Gemini integration from Google Home?

Hi @DannyCK
See the "How to turn off Gemini for Home camera features" section of the following help article.

There is no way to do that unfortunately. Once you switch your home to Gemini for Home voice assistant, it can't switch back to Google Assistant.

Are you guys prepared for the class action lawsuits that are to come??
12-08-2025 08:01 AM
Personally I would just open up and make a new Google account that way I can reset the speakers thoughts?
12-11-2025 02:35 PM
There is a way actually. You have to create a new home structure, then move all of your devices over to it. You will also have to recreate your rooms and speaker groups. It's a lot of work especially if you have a lot of devices.
12-11-2025 03:20 PM
Agree. I did it. It took a long time and I had to factory reset my devices several times because there were all these glitches getting them connected to the new home.
But all said and done so happy to not have Gemini anymore
12-11-2025 04:20 PM
Didn't I already say that?? Of course it is once you make a new account that's fine you may and I capitalize May go back to the original Google assistant, but Google is fading that software out so it's only a matter of time before you're forced into Gemini. I wouldn't waste my time I would just try to learn to deal with the new software. And make my comments to Google telling them what to improve.

Revert to Assistant, do not give in to Gemini for home.
Simultaneously, I will look into an online petition and encourage the users in this forum and elsewhere to align on a few specific asks. We will go this route and see what results we can force. If this is not successful, a class action lawsuit is a smart next step to research in feasibility.
Reversion to Assistant and refusal to accept Gemini are mutually exclusive from taking steps against Google to ensure they understand their customers perspective. One does not have to accept the usage of Gemini just because Google desires us to when there are other options still, and we do not live in China or North Korea, up to and including leaving Google.

I would join that suit. Google should not be shoving Gemini down our throats

I am looking for updates for this one.
I was a happy google nest user for three years until last month with the Gemini update. Simple tasks like turning off lights take twice as longer with the Gemini.
I finally decided to give up on it, after not seeing any updates fixing my issues. I am pro AI, but I wouldn’t even use Chatgpt as a Home Assistant. My $150 Nest Hub has been pretty much bricked with this update.
This could be the reason I switch back to Alexa, if I have to reset all my devices in order to get rid of this useless AI assistant.
Ready to do anything I can to fight with this!!!

At this point I'm thinking Amazon..I loved my little Google home set up. I'm older and not severally techy..it was simple, easy to use, easy to understand. Now I completely hate it! I need to find out if my lights and plug ins will work with echo stuff.
12-13-2025 05:01 PM
So we can NOT revert back to Google Assistant on our home devices? I hate the Gemini crap.
12-16-2025 04:39 PM
Gemini sucks and I don't want it on my devices or my life
12-23-2025 09:06 PM
When did I get hired by Google to be a beta tester for them, what is my salary and when can I expect my first check? That is exactly what is happening here, they are using us a unpaid labor to test their software and report the countless bugs that plague it. I don't know about you but I never signed up for that job but since I'm being forced to participate and not given any option not to, I think it's time a team of lawyers get involved and get us compensated for our forced employment!
02-05-2026 07:48 AM
I'm hoping that they fix it before moving everybody. For now I'm out of here!
02-16-2026 07:28 AM
Okay... It's BETTER!!
It may have been the latest update, or maybe it was sick of me cursing it, but the temperature and location has been perfect for 4 days. I still don't have full confidence, so I double check each answer. And I still think it stinks that we no longer can 'continue conversations', so Gemini continues to be a downgrade.
03-27-2026 10:08 AM
Update....back to bad, bad bad. So messed up.
02-11-2026 07:32 PM
So basically write it ourselves from scratch because Gemini is **bleep**.
03-27-2026 09:56 AM
I don't think anybody, emphasis on 'body', reads these comments. They probably have the AI read them. Guess how the AI filters these comments. The AI has convinced the company it is working fine. There is no spoon.
12-14-2025 07:27 AM
I am in the US and Gemini for Google Home tells me that today is Friday, December 14. While today is the 14th, it is most certainly NOT Friday. I can not have a device that cannot do something as simple as read a calendar accurately! It's credibility is at ZERO with me. it sucks!
12-20-2025 07:32 AM
I told Gemini that it reported the day of the week wrong. It then apologized and corrected it, now it works
12-20-2025 07:39 AM
Yeah, yeah. It works until next week. Last week on Saturday, it told me it was Friday. I corrected it. It apologized and for the rest of Saturday it got the day right. Then on Sunday and on Monday it insisted it was Friday, the 13th. Worked fine through the rest of the week. It's Saturday again and Gemini says it is Friday again...
Ask what the distance is between Fiji and Tahiti. It will tell you that it cannot find driving directions for your destination. Insist that you simply want the distance in miles. It will play music.... "Telling Pandora to play music on the living room speaker..."
So, it's not fixed. And I can't remove it.
12-20-2025 02:55 PM
That's interesting. When I tell Google that it reported the weather incorrectly or traveling ETA incorrectly, it doesn't even respond or improve.
12-20-2025 04:28 PM
You need to tell it u want to give feedback...
12-19-2025 03:54 AM
David_K Gemini on home cannot provide simple directions and times to destinations. That was one of the features I used the most. Do I need to trash my Google Home?
12-19-2025 05:29 PM
Unfortunately, I've been seriously considering it. I can never trust that it's actually telling me the correct temperature or wind speed and it has NEVER given me the correct ETA to a specific destination.

That's technically not true, there actually is, or should I say there WAS a way to go back to the original but Google has steadily been shutting down everything related to the original assistant so even if you do go back, I would guess that it can only do about 40% to 50% of what it used to do. I don't think Google thought this through very well when they decided to dismantle a perfectly good assistant before they had a replacement even remotely close to being ready. The funny things is that I used Gemini to actually get the answer on why the assistant isn't working. Even their shiny new project (Gemini) reports that Google made a huge mistake by slowly removing features from the Assistant before Gemini was ready to take over. And Gemini even said that it can not do most tasks that the Assistant did easily on a regular basis.
Anyway, the way to remove Gemini and revert back to the Assistant is not recommended but here ya go:
1). Remove/delete EVERY device from the Google Home app
2) Factory reset EVERY device. By every, I mean every device. Cameras, speakers, displays, any and everything that is attached to the Google Home app. Do NOT pair them back to your home yet.
3) Delete the Home from within the Google Home app. I left mine as the default word "Home" but if you changed it to Smith or Jones or anything else, you will need to delete that from the app.
4) Clear the cache and data from the Google Home app
5) Not needed but I did this anyway, restart the phone/tablet/whatever you're using the Google Home app on.
6) Launch the Google Home app again
There shouldn't be any "homes" listed unless you intentionally made others or intentionally left them on the profile. Either way, do NOT use those profiles with ANY devices you previously deleted and factory reset
7) Create a new "Home" (name it whatever you want EXCEPT what it previously was named. Do not use the previous name as that can inadvertantly pull Gemini data into the new profile which totally defeats the purpose of resetting everything) and then one by one begin adding the freshly factory reset devices back into that new Home profile.
You SHOULD be back with the Google Assistant but remember, Google has shut down most of it's abilities already so they're is a very high chance it wont be very helpful anymore. Also, Google is delaying the Assistant shut down by a few months because of the botched Gemini rollout so you'll have more time with it but, as much as I have my hopes up, I highly doubt they will reactivate any of the removed features.
It also should go without saying but do not click on that little shiny button (the try Gemini or early sign up or whatever they label it now) that Google is dangling in front of you again. All that does is invite Gemini back in and your back to where you were before you reset everything.
12-31-2025 02:31 PM
Gemini literally can't do half the things that Google home could. It can't tell me how long it's going to take to get somewhere, it can't help my kids brush their teeth (playing a song for them.) Why would you make a worse version of the thing you already made? I'm this close to selling all of my devices and finding another assistant.
01-22-2026 08:37 AM
I think what's worse is it says oh you can go back no problem if you change! That is complete BS. You can't go back if you change it you're going to have a migraine headache trying to change your 67 devices. Google sucks big time.
01-02-2026 02:21 PM
Its been 24h with an accidental switch over to gemini on my mini dot and I'm ready to light it on fire. respectfully.
01-02-2026 02:29 PM
If all you've got is a mini dot be sure to check out Matt202's instructions above on how to revert to the old assistant.
But be warned: Last I heard, Google plans to pull the plug on Assistant entirely in March.
01-02-2026 03:20 PM
@TinaBoo I read March 2026 for mobile phones, and late 2026 for Home speakers.
US users are still having trouble with Gemini on Home and the Home app hasn't completely transformed.
01-02-2026 04:27 PM
Thanks for that information! That makes me feel a little better. But the heart of my home automation is my Pixel tablet, so that's probably losing Assistant with the phones.
01-10-2026 12:50 PM
Google assistant was 10000000 times better. Gemini cant even get the weather correct. Keeps giving me DCs weather... im 5 hours from DC, how the hell is that helpful. Need to take the I out of AI. It's just artificial and dumb.
01-19-2026 03:39 AM
What an absolute disaster. I'm ready to scrap all my google home products
01-21-2026 12:53 PM
This also happened to me but with ALL my devices and now it broke my entire Home because my wife is a native Spanish speaker while I'm mostly bilingual. now it ONLY responds in English and doesn't accept or recognize Spanish in my house (after the "forced" Gemini update). It'd be nice to actually be able to revert because it put me in a situation that wasn't a problem before. How can I rollback if my house mostly speaks SPANISH and some English? That's not fair nor viable for a multi-trillion(T) dollar company service.

How do we get a refund foe these devices all around my home. Gemini is stressful and at this point i don't want the devices anymore im call bestbuy because this was supposed to a trail.I strongly dislike that we are being forced to use Google Gemini. Since switching to Gemini assistance, I’ve experienced more issues than ever before. The responses are significantly worse than before, with excessive and unnecessary commentary, frequent interruptions, and repeated claims that it “cannot answer” due to alleged restrictions that are not actually present. This has made the tool frustrating and inefficient to use. This version of Gemini is a major step backward. How do I revert to the original version?
02-06-2026 06:08 PM
Thanks for the answer. But this basically broke my device. It can no longer make calls and its become really poor at answering almost an question.
Is there really no was to just reinstall the Google Assistant?
02-11-2026 07:22 PM
The Gemini says if you leave the preview group all devices will default back to hey Google…is Gemini giving false information? I find it’s is the most worthless product to date and want it gone!
11-18-2025 08:36 AM
Anyone figure out how to revert or remove Gemini assistant from all devices? It's really terrible.
1. "Good Morning" automations aren't followed from the app settings:
- It will display what Google is saying on screen i.e. "Today's weather in ..." and not continue on to the news sometimes
- It will start talking to me from 1 device and then mid-automation start playing from another device in the house which is pissing off the family
- It will not follow the news sources selected in the iOS Google Home app
2. Gemini constantly mishears words
- Constantly gets confused with words or mishears what we're saying. It's way worse than the old assistant
3. Google Home Max speakers now have lipsync issues
- I have 2 Google Home Max speakers which are plugged in via 3.5mm audio cable to remove latency, however, now there's a distinct 1-2 second latency and lipsync with video is completely off
- This didn't happen prior to upgrading to Gemini
- It also doesn't make any sense that Gemini should effect it since audio source is via cable and not wi-fi
This latest upgrade to Gemini assistant is terrible and has completely borked our whole home setup.
Google shouldn't be rolling out mass updates like this without actually testing their systems.
