Hey Google Nest Community!

We recently shared news about introducing smoke & CO support in the Google Home app for Android Public Preview users, starting with Nest Protect. We also shared that we're expanding locks support in the Google Home app for Android Public Preview users for third-party Matter locks. Stay tuned for iOS release updates coming soon in early 2025.

If you’ve had the chance to read the news or were able to check out these updates yourself in Public Preview, we’d love to hear from you!

Comment below what you’re loving, what you’re not, and especially if you’re encountering any issues. We encourage you to enroll in Public Preview because you can try our latest features, and provide us feedback to help us improve the experience.

Attempting to review my 3 Protect devices in Google Home v3. 28 but am not seeing these devices even listed. Attempting to add them only directs me to the Nest app.

May attempt to reset the device and readd to Nest, but, seems counterintuitive.

Thoughts?

You must be enrolled in Public Preview for the Google Home app to see this update. My understanding is setup currently is still managed in the Nest app, this update makes the device visible for management in the Google Home app but only after setup has already been completed in the Nest app. This is similar to older Nest Thermostats, which are setup in the Nest app but are visible in both apps.

Completely understand.

I am part of the preview program.

Running v3.28

Have Nest thermostat and protect devices in Nest app. Thermostat is visible in Home but none of the protects.

Same with me. I’m on public preview (IOS) and don’t see protects. Any help appreciated.

Is it required to readd an existing aqara u200 matter lock or will the feature be enabled directly?

I do have a question. The Nest x Yale lock. Are we going to see any features that are in the Nest app? Setting new codes, family members, auto lock time adjustment etc? Or is the one touch locking and auto lock the only features we'll have for the foreseeable future?

If so, Nest x Yale lock owners can't uninstall the nest app.

I have this and use the Yale app.  You use the Nest app?

You are probable using one of the Yale locks and not the Nest-x-Yale locks; the two are not the same thing and therefore use different apps.

Nope - 💯 is Best Yale lock.  I bought and installed it.

I'd have to try that out and see for myself; I'd been of the belief that the lock can't work with any app other than the Nest and Google Home (albeit, very limited functionality) apps.

Not seeing anything here in the UK yet. Everything up to date. Glad to see after 7 years of waiting, some sort of update for us nest protect users 😃

Jonny

Same here in the UK. I meet all the criteria, app is up to date, devices all Gen 2. I'm a member of the Public Preview too.  Surprised no one from Google has replied to any of the posts (even if they say we are looking into it).

We've been waiting for this for so long, really looking forward to it finally arriving.

Same here, UK based and not seeing anything, however i suspect from the thread it's multi-faceted with no support on IOS yet despite nothing mentioned in the post and UK

I'm not seeing the Ability to use my Nest Protect in my Google Home App yet. What more do I need to do to start using Nest Protect in Google Home App? This is what I have below. 👇🏻

I'm in the Public Preview in the Google Home App running version 3.28.1.6. I'm on my Pixel 7 Pro running Android 15. My Nest App is running version 5.80.0.8. I am also a Nest Aware subscriber as well.

Is it working now? Mine showed up a day after the announcement.

Mine are now in my app but the data differes from the nest app. A example is a protect in GH says it offline however shows it checked in recently. Where as in the nest app there are no warnings at all.

The other thing is the settings, they all show as off in GH but are correctly set in the nest app.

Good news in regard to the Nest Protect.

But when do Nest-x-Yale users get to manage passcodes on the Home app? This is still a good lock even by today's standards, but it sounds like 3rd party locks get VIP treatment much to the chagrin of the owners of Google's own unit.

I get this that the Nest-x-Yale lock is soon headed for the graveyard, hot on the heels of the excellent Nest Secure it used to work with not so long ago.

I'm finding the protects are showing up on my partner's phone but not mine. Is there a reason for this?

Why don't they sell it in Japan?
Can I import it for personal use?

I have Nest Protects throughout my house.  I love a few things about them being added to the Google Home app:

1. The less apps I need, the better.  If everything is in one place, I'm happier.

2. I just ran a safety check from the app (Yes, you could do it in the Nest app, but it wasn't available in the Home app yet)!  While I don't have this problem, I can imagine people with really tall ceilings really liking the feature.

3. It's a pretty small, non-intrusive icon, but important for safety.

Thanks!!
