Nest battery camera no video/preview

I bought a new Nest battery camera.  It indicates that it seen a person, etc,  but in the preview it only has. Grey square with a ‘!’   Sometimes a preview flashes.  But if I open the preview most the time it just says ‘person’ and has no video.  
is the camera faulty? Can’t be too far away from WiFi because it’s telling me it saw sone thing?

Thanks for posting here in the community. Let's get the most out of your Nest Camera and see what we can do here. To confirm, do you have a Nest Aware subscription? How far is the history that you're trying to play? If possible, could you share with us the screenshot of your recorded video?

Give these steps a whirl:

• Try restarting your Nest Camera, mobile phone and WIfi router.
• Try checking the history using a different mobile device.
• Try checking history using your family members account.
