No Nest app notifications on Pixel 8

VK2023
Community Member

Moving from a Pixel 7 to Pixel 8, I do not receive any notifications from any of my Nest devices through the Nest app. I still receive the notifications on my Pixel 7 and my wife who has a Pixel 8 receives them also, so the app is pushing them.

I have done a hard reset on the Pixel 8 and I have verified all the notification settings are correct in the Nest app.

UPDATE: Notifications just suddenly started working. No idea why

Hey folks,

I have a quick update from the support team. They’re asking everyone to try the additional steps below:

  • Disable and then re-enable notification permissions via Android app settings (long-hold Nest app icon > App info > Permissions).
  • Toggle notifications off in the Nest app, wait 60 seconds, and re-enable.

If the issue persists, for those who haven't done so already, please provide the following details so we can investigate further:

  • Make and model of all the mobile devices used to test.
  • Android OS version.
  • Nest app version.

Let me know how it goes.

@mheschl, thanks for providing your device information. Please try the suggested steps above and check if they fix the issue.

Thank you all for your patience while we work on this.

Regards,

Lance

I've just paid my nest aware subscription for what I think will be the last time.  Since I spent way too much money on a top spec pixel 8 pro, the price has gone up for the subscription which is now pretty pointless.  I have a couple of cameras and a nest hello, some of which has migrated to Home now which seems to work, but the huge missing part for me is the doorbell.  No alerts from that is a huge loss so time to find an alternative solution which is a shame as Nest has been good up until this point.

Bad show Google, very disappointing.

Email alerts started randomly working for me today. They on average arrive 4/5 minutes after someone has been at the door and not when the bell is rung.

Basically garbage for me at this point as is for you bud!

@Lance_L

Please can we have an update????????????

There you go. I reformatted/reset my phone and I still get no notifications. For those who are wondering, don't do it. It may work or it may not work. I reset and no notifications from Nest as that's the first thing I tried. This is ridiculous.

The silence from Google on this is very deafening. I am one of the (few) lucky ones who had the issue then a hard reset with no restore happened to fix the issue. It shouldn't be this way though and gives very little promise in the future for Google to expedite issues and fix them.

From what I remember on this issue and my hard reset of the device, within 48hrs started getting notifications again, so I have my fingers crossed for you Bkazn!

@Lance_L can you please acknowledge this?

Still does not work for me.

Android 14 January Security Patch Pixel 8 Pro

Nest App 5.73.0.3

Works fine on Android 11 Chromebook, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Android 13.

The support team has offered the same advice as here. I can forward the emails if you like?

I've tried the factory reset option today. What a waste of time that was, still no push notifications. Now I have this evening to setup my phone from scratch!

I've sent feedback via the Nest and in-built Android Settings feedback sections. Just hope Google will do something about it!

Maybe it's time to finally transfer Nest Hello Doorbells to the Google Home app! It's taking long enough!

I can't believe Google still hasn't got round to fixing this. It's in main stream news media and has been since November 2023!

@Lance_L is this getting anywhere nearer to a potential solution or even some sort of work around?  I'm almost at the point now of canclling my nest aware subscription and removing the cameras for something that does work.  I know this is specifically about the nest alerts on my phone, and my other cameras have migrated to the Home app, however without the hello migrating there too if leaves me with a half working solution, and the half that doesn't work is the bit I really need to work.

Well luckily my Nest Subscription has now run out, and I have not allowed the auto renew.

Unless there is a fix in the next month, I will start moving over to something else (I hear the Philips Hue Cameras are good, with proper end to end encryption for free! Plus they actually care about their hardware performance for older models!).

I suggest others do the same. The only way Google will see an impact is when subscriptions fall.

For Europe and UK subscribers, probably worth doing anyway considering we are stuck with old Nest Hello HW anyway, and are not allowed the 2nd Gen Wired Nest Doorbell!

Just cancelled mine too.  Anyone want to buy a good condition Nest Hello?  Alerts work fine as long as you don't buy an expensive Pixel phone.

is there now a solution for this issue?

No notifications from home app on Pixel 8 for nest camera. It works with same app & phone notification settings on Pixel 5

Shaadeh

@Lance_L  it's been 5 months now since I bought an expensive Google phone and my doorbell notifications stopped working on it. Y other half laughs daily as they work just fine on her iPhone.

Any chance of an update or possible fix?  All the suggestions in this thread don't work for me, or a lot of people.  How about migrating the nest hello to the Google home app?  That might fix it!

@Lance_L , is there any update on this whole situation? None of the solutions offer on this thread or via Nest Support has fixed the issue.

Fundamentally PUSH NOTIFICATIONS are entirely broken on the Nest App for anything (Nest Hello Doorbell or Fire Alarms etc). Anything on the Google Home app is fine.

Applied the Nest app update today. Logged out, restarted the phone and logged back into. No change. Still not getting push notifications.

Another update (February patch), another disappointment.  Are the push notifications for the Nest doorbell on the Pixel 8 ever going to get fixed? How much did I pay for these two pieces of Google hardware to not have them work together?

So, I'd previously tried a Factory Reset on my Pixel 7, to no avail. But... I thought I'd try again.  IT WORKED!!

This time though, when re-setting up my phone, I did so from absolute scratch.  No bringing all my Settings, apps, or SMS, back in via any backup/restore features.  I have no idea why this would work, but it did.  I'm back to getting notifications. 👍🏼

(NB: In a previous post, I mentioned requesting a refund of my Nest subscription from Google.  They did get back to me about this and I'm going to get a refund for the months that I was without notifications (mine stopped when my phone updated to Android 14).  I suggest y'all request refunds too.  That will defo get them moving on sorting this out.  Money talks.)

This works on my Pixel 7 Pro but not my Pixel Fold.

For now I've turned on email notifications which works. You get a video snippet.

Seems this will never get fixed by Google.

JediMasterPeppy

I'm not sure whether this helps the Google Rep watching this thread.

But Nest Push Notifications in general are now ALL broken, not just the Nest Hello Doorbell. I have X2 Protect Fire Alarms, and the regular sound check notifications are also now not showing.

Basically on the Google Home App Nest devices are working for me, anything on the legacy Nest App is broken for PUSH NOTIFICATIONS.

I've enabled the Email Notifications as a temporary stop gap for the Doorbell camera, but it's been months and I'm looking at alternative hardware providers now as most offer End 2 End Encryption for the feed too.

What stuns me as that the Nest Hello is still the only wired doorbell option for Europe, so it's a live selling piece of hardware too in Europe! How bad is that for product support!?!

I have done a full factory reset on the phone, factory reset on the doorbell and setup phone from scratch.  Literally loaded Nest app before anything else and did all the suggestions above and still nothing.  Utterly amazing that Google has not been able to fix this issue going on 5 months.  Does anyone know if Ring is having these issues because it may be time to change.

I also don't receive notifications from app hoyolab after the update

Hi. I've been having the same issue with my pixel 6. No push notifications. I'm getting email notification coming through. Spoke to nest customer service but even they didn't have an answer after doing everything they advised me to. Any help would be much appreciated. One thing I haven't done is a factory reset. Not sure if that will do anything? TIA

Don't bother with a factory reset (whether it's the start from scratch or start from backup), I've found neither works, however, some have, so the results are clearly inconsistent.

Thanks. Luckily my contract ends next month. Can't wait to leave pixel. Not had push notifications for months. And customer service haven't been helpful. They just said sorry nothing else we can do!

I'd do the reverse. Pixel Phones are pretty decent, particularly the camera.

Anything else Google Hardware is barely supported and end of life'd fast.

I'd keep the phone (more expensive) and replace the door bell (less expensive).

You mean replace the doorbell with another nest or move onto ring?

Move away from Nest. The hardware support from Google for it's Nest brand is horrendous at best, legacy devices are barely supported. The transfer from Nest to Home app is closing in on 3 years of "development". Legacy devices are also still sold in the EU, Asia and other regions, whereas newer gen hardware is prioritised in the US only (look at the Nest Wired Doorbell Gen 2 as an example).

Generally Google only does Pixel Hardware well, with at least some signs of hardware support and development. Anything outside of Pixel is shocking poor most of the time.

Obviously this is my opinion, but I've been in the Google Ecosystem too long to be stung too many times.

And there are good alternatives to Nest nowadays.

So clear my phone as if it was new. And don't do any backup. Download apps and everything from the beginning. Is that what you mean? (What about WhatsApp, contacts, photos etc)

Didn't work for me. Tried both types of reset too

So I guess it's worth a try. I've been trying to avoid this as I have too much on my phone 😢

Definitely worth a try then. Will give it a go. Thanks

Hi,

I just got told, by the Nest support, that "unfortunately Pixel 8 is not compatible for the push notifications in the Nest app"

Ahmedkais
Community Member

How?! My wife went for the pixel 8 pro and she started receiving push notifications. I still don't get anything even with them replacing my pixel 6! I'm just going to move away from pixel all together. Had enough

VK2023

Not true, I have a Pixel 8 and get the push notifications for the Nest app

I have a Pixel 8 Pro, have done a basic and full factory reset with and without restoring the data from my Google Account... None of it worked. No Push Notifications.

So the solution is not so rosy for all of us

Ed1114

Seriously?! What the hell, their flagship phone can't support their own system. They should give us replacements for our legacy cameras then. This is stupid.
