Turning on Nest Floodlight with Google Home preview app

With the regular Google Home app, I could manually turn on the floodlights for the Nest floodlight camera.  I do not see a way to do this with the preview app.  It could be user error, but I can’t find it.

I’m seeing the same.

I’m suspecting it may be unrelated to the preview.   I reverted to the regular version of Google Home and the Nest Floodlight light controls were missing there also.  I removed the camera from the app, did a factory reset, and re-added.   That did not help

Agreed. I tried the same. This seems to be a problem on the Google end. Interestingly- it seems like the camera in the app is being identified as just a Nest Cam (Battery) and not a floodlight cam.

When I first installed my Nest Floodlight the "Camera" was identified as a Nest Cam (battery).  This is because that is what it really is.  It is a Nest Cam (battery) that has a continuous power source.  Also that is why it has a battery back up for the camera portion.

It’s odd.  The floodlight camera and light had both been working fine for months

Now:

  • the floodlight controls have disappeared from Google Home
  • The floodlight seems to function fine independently.  Ie. Motion activates the lights at night
  • The camera does not seem to be charging while connected to the floodlight base
    • the plugged in indicator (infinity sign ) is present
    • there is a message “Make sure your power cable and adapter are connected and compatible with your camera”
    • I get a low battery indicator after a few days
  • i have removed/factory reset and re-added a few times
  • If I remove the camera, I can charge it manually

I’ll try calling in to support again

Are you sure you have power at the light location? I am talking about the 120 Volt AC power.  Has a power wire become loose?  Did someone flip a light switch that needs to be on?

Yes, of course.  The floodlights work

Yes. This is a bug on the google side. The flood light comes on when motion is detected but it no longer shows as a switch to control and you can’t change any of the motion settings anymore. Problem persists even after a full reset. This is a google bug.

Thanks.  Now that I look, it seems

pretty common.   I could temporarily live with the floodlight not appearing  in the app, but the lack of charging and short battery life are a pain.  Seems like both issues are known

Opps, I missed the fact that it was working as a floodlight on motion detect.  Only thing I can offer is to check the small cord that attaches the camera to the light.  Remove, air blast, contact cleaner, and then reattach. Might get lucky but it sounds like a Google fault that others have experienced.

Interesting just today I can control floodlight settings on this camera! Something must have been fixed on the google side.

But I still don’t have a separate light control for the floodlight in the home app. I can’t turn it on and off manually.

Ah, I had to expand the entire location and now I do see the floodlight control. This seems fixed for me.

It turns out the unit was defective.  I called into support and they sent a replacement unit that fixed the problem
