As many of you know, one of the most powerful parts of the new script editor for Google Home is the ability to build advanced home automations. Automations are helpful for things like making your home look occupied when you’re away, or sending you notifications when unfamiliar faces are spotted. However, creating these advanced automations can be a bit tricky — especially if you’re not very familiar with coding.
Starting today, our new "help me script" feature allows you to enjoy the benefits of home automation via natural language prompts and generative AI, even if you don’t have technical expertise. This is rolling out as a limited-time experimental feature in Public Preview on Google Home for web.
Let’s say you want to automatically set the mood in your living room when you’re starting your evening TV session. Just type in “when the TV turns on after sunset, dim the living room lights and close the blinds”, and you’ll get a personalized automation script that’s ready to use. Check out the experience below:
It’s simple to create personalized automations with “help me script”.
- In Google Home for Web (home.google.com/automations), sign into your account, and click “+ Add new” to open the script editor
- On the right side panel, type a description of the automation you want to create using everyday, natural language. See prompt examples below, in bullet points
- Press “enter” or click the “send spark” button to generate a script that performs the desired automation
- Review the script output and click the “Copy” button
- Paste the script into the script editor
- Click Validate to verify your script is able to run with no errors
- Click the “Save” button to add the automation to your home or save in-progress work. If the script is valid when you save it, your automation automatically activates
Here are some more ideas for the types of automations that you can create using “help me script”
- When I wake up in the morning, start the coffee maker, and play my favorite playlist
- Lock the doors and turn off the lights when I go to bed
- Use lights and TVs to make my house look occupied when I arm the security system
- Send me a notification when the doorbell rings but nobody is home
- Suggest an automation to keep the air fresh when I'm cooking
- Run the vacuum on Tuesday and Friday when I’m away, and stop it when I arrive home
As always, remember that compatible smart devices are required, and routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases.
