Hey everyone,

We recently announced Nest Renew is now available to qualified Nest Thermostat users. Nest Renew Basic is free to join. But we also offer a premium subscription with even more perks for being a clean energy user. Check out our Q&A with Community user Sam Rothermel to learn why he joined the premium subscription.

Q: Why did you decide to join Nest Renew and opt into the premium tier of the service? Can you share some of your experiences with Nest Renew Premium?

A: Low cost and easy way to support clean energy; already have a Nest thermostat so it's a no-brainer. Most energy efficiencies we already do, so this is a nice way to get more benefit in an automated fashion. I don't always know what's going on behind the scenes, but even small little changes that don't affect our comfort add up. Gamification with the leafs is pretty brilliant and another easy way to feel like we're making a difference, even if it's with behaviors and things we already do. Finding the dashboard has been a sore spot though, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get there with existing services like Nest or Google Home to get to the Renew dashboard.

Q: Speaking from your experience, what’s the best feature of Nest Renew Premium?

A: Earning leafs is definitely one of the best features, extending that to supporting clean energy initiatives is a really nice way to make us feel like we're doing more. Clean energy matching makes paying for the service an easy choice.

Q: Why do you think it’s a good idea for other users to turn on that service feature?

A: If you're already using a smart thermostat, it's an easy and low cost way to drive more sources of clean energy.

Q: What feature most interested you in the program? (For example: The monthly energy impact emails, the user interface and gamification of the service through collecting and redeeming leafs, the EIP program or the satisfaction of contributing to a cleaner energy grid)

A: All of the above! Pretty much as soon as it was available, I was on board. We've had smart thermostats for close to a decade.

Q: What would you like people to know about the Nest Renew Premium service, who haven't made up their mind yet whether to turn this feature on?

A: Using a smart thermostat means you already support smart choices when it comes to energy usage: do it! You lose nothing and for a small fee you can help to make a big impact across the board. - Sam R.
