Hello - does NestCam need to be located near Wifi or is this only essential for setup?

Yes, Nest Cams are designed to be always on and connected to Wi-Fi because they upload and securely save video in the cloud, where it's protected from theft and damage. For your camera to upload video to the cloud, it needs to be connected to Wi-Fi and the Nest service. Strictly speaking, Nest Cams can record and save events to their internal memory, but that is intended for when the Wi-Fi disconnects or there's a service issue. It is not intended or designed to be used like this permanently.

Yes they do. If they are battery cameras they will use obscene amounts of battery power searching for wifi if not left connected to the wifi permanently and i mean obscene amounts up to 5% of the battery power in a 24 hour period.
