Doorbell not picking up animals

Hello I have a problem with my battery powered nest doorbell. I have the settings to setup to be able to pick up animals and vehicles and all events. The problem is it won't pick up animals. We've had several squirrel's, cats and a raccoon come to our front door and it won't detect them until my girlfriend or I log in and view the live viewing. Then it will say animal detected. But as soon as we stop viewing the live video it will stop recording.
