Live Video When Doorbell is Rang

*Product is Nest Doorbell (wired Gen 3)*

Hello. I’m having an issue I had hoped would have been resolved with the purchase of the latest and greatest Nest doorbell.

I previously had the Nest Hello doorbell (wired) and it would for several years without an issue. Recently I moved and installed the doorbell and the live video would no longer play when the doorbell would ring. After many chat sessions with the support team and repeated trouble shooting, it was determined that the internal battery needed to be charged for 30 minutes and the device reinstalled. After doing this, the issue still remained. I assumed the battery was shot so I decided to buy the latest generation of the doorbell (gen 3).

I just bought the doorbell and installed it today 10/13/25. The live video worked the very first time I pressed the button and clicked the notification on my phone (Google home app). After the first ring of the doorbell, I can no longer view live video when the button is pressed. It’s viewable from the Google home app in other time. I dug around on the internet and found the trick for turning off the indoor chime. Tried that and it worked one time. Now it’s no longer working. I really hope I’m able to find a solution as I’ve invested heavily in the Google ecosystem and have no issues with any of their other products (thermostat, outdoor cam, speakers, hubs, etc).

Anyone know how to resolve this issue on a brand new device?

It sounds like you’re running into the same firmware or power-related issue some users have reported with the wired Nest Doorbell (Gen 2 and Gen 3). Since your live view works normally except when the button is pressed, it’s likely a software glitch triggered by the chime signal or a power dip.

A few things to try:

  1. Check transformer power – Make sure it’s at least 16–24 V AC and 10 VA or higher. Low voltage can cause brief restarts when the doorbell rings.

  2. Disable “Indoor chime” temporarily in the Home app → Doorbell settings > Doorbell sound and test the live feed again.

  3. Reboot and clear app cache (especially if you’re using Android).

  4. Factory reset the doorbell, then reinstall it—some users say the second pairing fixes the live-view freeze.

  5. File feedback in the Google Home appHelp > Send feedback, since this seems to be a recurring bug that may need a firmware update.

If none of those steps help, contact Google Support again and reference the power verification—you may qualify for a replacement if the hardware isn’t maintaining live stream on ring.

1. I checked the transformer for the doorbell and it is 16V 10A.

2. I do already have the indoor chime turned off.

3. How do I reboot and clear the app cache? I’m not seeing that in the Google Home app settings or in Settings > Apps > Google Home on my phone (iOS)

4. Will try factory reset and reinstallation.

5. If none of the above work, I’ll submit feedback.

I've had the exact same issue on the 2nd gen wired doorbell and thought upgrading to the newest 3rd gen would finally solve this problem but I'm experiencing the exact same issue as you. It defeats the purpose of a smart doorbell because you can't view or talk if someone walks up to your door/rings the bell. Essentially if there's any movement detected, you can't view live video without the quality going to 240p and it lagging to hell. I've disabled chime like everyone suggested and I've triple checked I have a big enough transformer. Nothing works.

Hoping you find a solution and keep us updated
